- Q: i'm about to plant a garden this year but since i have a dog, i have to be sure the plants are non toxic to him. i would appreciate it if someone gave me a list of all the edible and safe plants for dogs.thanx!
- As a fellow Boxer owner, I know you have your hands full. You can use the other methods described below, and they may help, but the real answer is excercise and then more exercise. You say she has plenty but how much is that? My Boxer is the same way when she does not get to run or go for a long walk. I come home to find she has taken things (like today was a package of curtains, the last time it was a picture frame) out into the yard to play with, even though she has a Cocker Spaniel as a playmate and can go in and out of the house into a large fenced in yard! She can run for an hour or go for a 4.5 mile walk and then run some more. I try to give her a run every day, but can't always do it now that it's getting darker earlier, so I play ball with her on the stairs. Boxers are high energy dogs, and it sounds like yours is finding ways to release some of it. She may also need mental stimulation - teach her the find it game. Hide small tidbits around the room while she is in another one. Bring her near the first one and say find it. Keep working with her a little each day until she knows what find it means. My dog can be told to find specific things, she knows how to find her basketball, soccer ball, bone, hoofie, Dad, etc. I'm planning next to teach her how to pull a cart - that should keep her busy, and a dog with a job is a happy one. Good luck - Boxers Rule!
- Q: Is this guinea pig cage ok for one guinea pig??
- Sorry, but it's not big enough. You have to get AT LEAST (MINIMUM) 5 square feet for 1 guinea pig. I have about 6-7.5 square feet for my 2 pigs, and they're happy and healthy. You don't have to over-do it, like when people say you need a 11 square foot cage for 2 guinea pigs. Now get real! (Not you) A cage 4-5 square feet will be just fine. Don't listen to those other people. Just make sure you take your guinea pig out regularly! Hope this helps! Good luck!
- Q: I would like to plant some clover in my flower garden because I want to plant a vegetable garden next year, but I have some questions about it. 1.) When can I plant the clover? I'd like to till the soil and then plant the clover before winter starts.2.) What kind of clover should I plant?3.) And any other advice you could give me would be great :) This is my first vegetable garden all on my own. Thanks!
- Clover are often used as cover crops between annual vegetable harvests or on the floor of orchards to help fix nitrogen and enrich the soil. In garden beds, till red clover under or add it to the compost pile before you plant annual vegetables or flowers. Use white clover in orchards, especially if you have low-grazing animals to fertilize the orchard, such as ducks, chickens, geese, rabbits or goats. Plant clover in the spring or early summer, when the ground has become soft and moist from the spring rains. You may also plant in September or early October in most locations. Clover seed is very small, so you may want to mix it with lime or fertilizer to give you more substance to work with. Do not use a strong fertilizer on clover, as it can burn the plant's thin roots.
- Q: I'm wondering which of these two stores is better to go to for gardening tools and supplies. Someone help and tell me why!! :)
- Big box stores are not where I usually buy my gardening supplies, but I may buy a tool or 2 there is the quality and price is right. To buy good tools you need to look for the best price but the most important is the quality. Cheap poor quality tools just don't last. I found that out years ago after buying a new trowel just about every year. I splurged on a stainless steel one. I take good care of it and it has lasted 40 years. I use 16 oz. disposable colored beer glasses for pots and I put holes in the bottom with a wood burning tool. @ $3 for 50 they are not even worth washing and sterilizing to use again. I also use plastic mushroom boxes and other plastic grocery containers for growing plants. The plastic biscuit containers make a good tray and humidity hood. I buy my soiless pro mix at a local nursery and pay $30 for a 2.8 cubic feet of compacted mix. It is much cheaper than buying those small bags and as long as you keep it dry will last for years. Many of my trays are from the grocery store garden center after they are finished selling flowers. They only throw them out anyway and are happy to give them to you.. My fertilizer may come from a big box store or anywhere else that has a good price. To sum things up--buy quality tools--recycle anything you can and look for the cheapest price on the rest
