- Q: I got tired of having to remulch it every year so I used lava rock this year instead but now my roses don't seem to be blooming anymore.
- I wouldn't think that would matter, as long as the roses can still get all the water they need. It's possible they need fertilizer, of course. The only other thing I can think of (presuming the plants themselves are healthy) is that they were pruned at the wrong time and the portions of the canes that would have produced buds were removed.
- Q: This is my first gardening experience. The tomatoes turned out nicely. But now what do I do? If I leave the plants, will they grow more tomatoes again?
- Tomato plants should keep on producing in smaller amounts until the cold weather comes. Make sure you keep watering. if you have lots of trusses of flowers, cut most of them off. leaving only 2 or 3. This will be less stress on the plant and you may get a good second crop.

- Check out this web site for some ideas. I personally planted Strawberries, they are doing very well, and come back nicely every year. I also planted a couple of blueberry bushes. I planted these last year and it was recommended to not allow them to bear fruit the first year. So the verdict is out on them. However, I have high hopes.
- Q: I live in San Diego, Ca,, pretty sunny most of the year, but can get pretty cold in the winter.. I'm hoping to start my own veggie and herb garden this summer (august 08) but don't know if it's the right season to do it, or if I should just wait. - You need to add some fertilizer, (In Australia something like Blood'n bone). dig it in, and also heap the soil up into rows (to help drainage). Someone else was asking about Vegie gardens in the Australian part of this, and one person suggested newspaper around the plants to suppress the weeds. This is a great idea. Go to your local nursery and see what vegie seedlings they have in stock now. Or ask there as they will know what is in season. Goodluck with your garden :)

- Go okorder (Better Homes and Gardens). They have landscaping plans for all types of yards and conditions, along with substitute plants for the ones they list in some of them. They also have a program on their site where you can create your own plan by plugging in the dimensions of your yard and adding plants the size you want to see how it will look. One good way to keep the weeds from coming through is to put down black plastic before you plant. Fasten it down well (we cut about 6 lengths of wire and bend them like staples), cut holes in it where you want your plants, and plant them through it. You can cover it with mulch once you've finished to hide the plastic. The plastic also holds in moisture and heat, so you won't have to water as often.

- Remove what they eat! Insects for the lizards. And small rodents,frogs and the like for snakes! Lizards are no real problem and neither are the snakes. As long as they are not poisonous! Anyway, they are doing you a big favor being there getting rid of the destructive pests!
