- Q: what does light years mean?
- Don't they teach anything in school anymore? A light year is the distance that light travels in one year. The time it takes for the light from a star (or any object) to reach your eye depends on how far away the object is.
- Q: is there a way to measure roughly the light intensity coming out of a torch in a dark room? preferably without a light meter
- In regard to Anal kumar S method of using photoelectric effect to help determine the intensity, I think it is not a good way to determine the intensity of the light from the torch. The type of metal emitter used is important as if the light from the torch, being not monochromatic, have certain light with a frequency below the thrash old/cutoff frequency of the metal, then that frequency of light is as good as useless. Furthermore, this experiment is hard to carry out. The collector plate will not be able collect most of the photoelectric electrons as the electrons will ionise the nearby air particles. This will affect the current measured and the intensity of light measured will carry a large percentage error. The way to prevent this is to conduct the experiment in a vacuum container. Also, the current measured will most likely be small due to the relatively low frequency of the light from a normal torch. A very sensitive ammeter is needed to detect the current. However, I am not able to think of better ways to measure the intensity :p. Maybe use a spectrometer or use a light dependent resistor and, of course, you need to know the characteristic of the resistor.

- Different types of light bulb will change the appearance of colours in a picture. Look for information on colour temperature of lighting. Flourescent lighting has a higher temperature and has more blue in it than incandescent lighting, so pictures will look colder than when light with old-style bulbs or by daylight. Specialist bulbs can be used to exaggerate this effect: red tinted ones are fairly easy to obtain, and ultraviolet (black light, purple coloured) bulbs such as are used in some nightclubs and in banknote scanners also change the appearance of pictures. Interior designers have to think about the effects of lighting, as it changes through the day from daylight to artificial lighting, when selecting colours and textures. I'm not sure what you mean by destroy. To physically destroy a picture, however, you'll need a very very bright light, bright enough to burn the picture. An industrial laser would do.

- Parking lights: Amber in front, Red in rear Turn Signal lights: Amber in front, Amber or Red in rear Tail Lights: Red Brake lights: Red 1156 bulbs are single filament while 1157 ones are dual filament. Your Tail Lights will be 1157's, since they also act as your brake lights. Some cars also use 1157 bulbs in the front turn signals, using the second filament for the front parking lights. Your Reverse Lights MUST be clear. A few years ago, I was stopped by a local police officer for having green bulb covers on the rear turn signals and blue ones on my reverse lights. He was nice enough to show me in his traffic handbook the lighting color rules and let me go since I fixed it on the spot. If you do get stopped for wrong-colored lights, be polite and offer to correct the problem right then if you can. Doing that saved me from 2 tickets that night.

- The amount of light needed all depends on the room and whether there is enough light in the room. You don't need to have proffesional lighting gear to achieve the same efffects (great if you do!) If additional light is need you can you the flash for the camera or you can gring in other additional lights sources such as lamps. Using a digital camera is good as a you can preview what the photo looks like and if needed adjust the lighting and take the picture again.
