I would go with a chemical adhesive, fancy talk for glue. For this application I should think there will be no stress on the piece so simple super glue from anywhere you shop should do it. Not substantial enough for you? Use a few pop rivets, easy to do and you can find a pop rivet set cheap. Try Harbor Freight as a source. Of course these will leave bumps from the rivets that might detract from the appearance you are trying to achieve.

Builder's Square (now out of business) used to carry them. I bought some and attached them to a three-panel screen to use when I practiced tap dancing. If your co-worker has never had a baby, they just don't know any better. Also, what do you mean old diapers? Like years old or leftovers? I would take a friends leftover diapers anyday. Draw them on thicker paper, and then buy contact paper (the sealing people put in cabinets). It is very inexpensive. Also, I have found, if you live by an university, it is fairly cheap to use their laminators.

You can use all of the above, or go to WalMart and buy the plastic kits that you would use to winterize your windows. They work just as well. Or, you can go to a thrift store and purchase old bedsheets for twenty-five cents apiece. Wash them with bleach, and there ya go!
