- Q:What do you do during shore duty?Which one would you say has the best outlook for an 20+ year career?Are these the hardest working jobs on the boat?
- I have served with each of these. Shore duty tends to be in factories alongside a pier. They are called: Intermediate Maintenance and Repair Facilities. Basically machine shops that rebuild valves. However I know one guy that was on a boat with me who got orders to NAS Fallon Nevada to be in charge of their go-cart course. They needed a EN to keep the go-carts running. The needs of the Navy change every month. To say which rate with advance the fastest is a guess. It changes all the time. If you stay out of trouble, you can serve for 20 years and get a pension. Anyone who guarantees you that by doing 'X' will make you a chief, is lying. They all work hard. And they are each highly valued jobs, with good job prospects when you get out. I would recommend that you consider subs too. The extra pay does not hurt.

- Nope. That would make imports even cheaper than they are now. He can make a lot of jobs by doing things like how large certain companies, like banks and insurance companies can be which will increase competition and decrease efficiency which will create more jobs. - Q:It seems additive layer manufacturing comes in laser to metal format,if so, acquring just one of these machines (although I realize at a ridiculously high price) covers all the functionalities of many variations of CNC machines. (like mills, lathes, routers etc, of which I assume there are limitations on angular production)Will this not cut the learning curve and rapid prototyping time significantly?Or is there limitations in these type of rapid prototyping machines as well do you think?I just think, learning and using many different machines these days on manufacturing is quickly becoming obsolete. - 3D printing is a great technology getting better all the time. While the 3D printer can make all of those shapes within a certain precision (they lay down thin sheets of plastic on top of each other) there are many limitations of the process, such as size, materials, precision, and manufacturing throughput that make it not the best choice in all cases. I designed a part recently out of aluminum that thermally connected a tank to a cold plate heat exchanger. It was made on a CNC mill and could not have been made with 3D printing. Because of the size of it, even if there was a material available, 3D printing would likely have been at least 10X more expensive than CNC milling was. More processes gives engineers more design freedom to come up with better stuff.
