Carbon fiber composite core conductors(hereafter called CFCC for short) consists of composite core and annealedaluminum formed wires outer layer. Theannealed aluminum formed wiresouter layer and its adjacent layer aretrapezoidal cross-section. CFCC is a kind of carbon fiber product with highperformance. Compared with the traditional aluminum conductorssteels-reinforced(hereafter called ACSR for short), it has series of advantagesincluding light weight, high tensile strength, high heat resistance, corrosionresistance, high current carrying capacity etc.
In the case of the same weight, CFCC hashigher current carrying capacity, which will be twice of the conventional ACSR.The annealed aluminum formed wires which has less line loss is used in CFCC.Moreover, Composite core is non-magnetic material, so it does not have magneticloss and thermal effects caused by the steel wire material. It will greatlyreduce the line transmission loss. CFCC can improve the current carryingcapacity under high temperature since its heat resistance (can be 160 ℃ as long-term runningtemperature) is far more higher than that of the ACSR (70℃ as the max operating temperature).On the other hand, CFCC has light weight. So in the case of the same weight,cross-section of aluminum can be increase by 20%-40%. Therefore Reerecting thenew CFCC line for increasing transmissioncapacity without transforming thepoles and towers became possible.
CFCC has the higher strength and higherlevel of safety. The tensile strength of the ACSR is 1240MPa, and high strengthsteel conductors is 1410MPa; however CFCC can be up to 2400MPa which increasesthe safety.
It will reduce the transmission linecorridor, save land resources and lower the comprehensive total cost oftransmission line construction by using CFCC. CFCC ’s linear expansioncoefficient is small, and it reduces the lines sag, and will not be affected bylong-term creep of aluminum, also it avoids sag due to the thermal expansion ofthe traditional ACSR. The height of the tower can be reduced, and the distancebetween towers can be increased due to its light weight. More than 16% polesand towers will be reduced to save the transmission space height and areas.
CFCC has good anti-aging performance andlong operating life. it avoids the trouble that the ACSR’ electrochemical corrosion between thealuminum and galvanized steel core. compared with the ACSR, CFCC resist acid raincorrosion.
CFCC has good resistance to wind load.with its high strength, light weight, cross section covered by aluminum formedwire, small diameter.
CFCC have the ability of melting snowand ice. The outer layer has no gaps and is compacted smoothly. Snow and ice isnot easy to be freezed. The conductor will melt snow and ice by itself When itis running under high temperature also.
