- sounds like the power options are set to go to hibernate or sleep automatically when ever it lid closes. These options can be changed on the power option on the control panel, in this case you want to set it to do nothing when the lid closes.

- as soon as you start the laptop on the first screen you should see 'press F10 to enter Recover' or something simular, press the F10 key, or it might be F2, then follow the instructions. if you want to 'restore to factory settings' there should be an option there to do so. restoring to factory settings will remove all files and everything on the laptop and restore it to how it was when you first bought it. if you cant manage to restore it to factory settings, just google 'compaq factory settings'
