The green wire can have a yellow stripe around it but it its still earth ground. Today, then a motor that has brushes is DC and a motor that does not is AC. If I am confused then I always find the source of power and then it becomes apparent. In the european community then the brown wire is hot and the blue wire neutral with single phase. In the American commuity then the black wire is hot and white wire is neutral with single phase. Always measure the voltage with a proven good voltmenter.

Capacitors store electricity, in this case they discharge when the motor is turned on to give it an extra boost of electricity. Some motors also have an internal start winding and if this winding burns out then the motor won't start on its own. I recommend that you have a tech look at it, capacitors still carry a lethal amount of current even when everything is turned off and the electricity supply disconnected.

Q:It's quite a newbie question x_x there is a label on the motor I've got (top image) and it has 3 inlets for wires. 2 white wire go into the middle inlet and one blue for each left and right inlets.I presume the middle one is for the neutral and either left or right is for the phase wire.Thanks in advance :): The labeling is ambiguous, and the motor lacks a dedicated ground. Your assumption seems correct. The blue wires are the Capacitor on the load side of the terminal block. Don't alter the load side. Connect neutral to the center (0) terminal on the supply side, and Line 1 (220VAC ungrounded) to terminal 1 or 2 depending on desired rotation. Ground the motor's frame.

Q:And does a device that runs at alternate current only, mean that it will only run at a set number of cycles/frequency?: Only universal motor can run on both AC and DC. If you want to modify an AC motor to run on DC, then at first you need to know constructional details and working principle of DC motor.
