Looks more like a flea to me. The stains on the sham don't look like bed bug nesting to me either. Do an image search for bed bugs, that should answer your curiosity.

If the beds have slats that support the box springs make sure to secure them too. Basically secure everything to ensure it stays together. If the head and foot boards are of different heights you'll need to cut them to uniform height. Safe is relative to how solid the beds are, so use good judgment before proceeding. BTW...I did it when my kids were younger and it worked perfectly. I worked roughly 10 years repairing furniture so that should count for something I hope.
