- Light is one form of transformation of energy. The one that emits light is called luminous object. Energy from the object is transmitted into the space in the form of light energy. Similar to light rays we have many other rays such as Gamma rays, X-rays, Microwaves, ultra violet rays infra red rays and radio waves [short, medium and long] waves. All these rays belong to a family called electro-magnetic radiation and energy from an object is transmitted into space All these rays transmit energy at a speed = 3x10^8 m/s, a value which cannot be exceeded by any material objects. The main characteristics of all these radiations are the frequencies of the wave. Their frequency difference gives them different characteristics and properties. Though heat energy is transmitted by conduction and convection, there is another method of transmission of energy called radiant heat. This radiation of heat energy is again electro magnetic radiation. Below 600? C all objects emit heat energy. These radiations are not sensed by our eye, but our skin feels this energy. When we are near a stove we feel hot due to this radiation of energy. When the temperature raises more, high frequency waves are emitted. These frequencies are sensed by our eye and we call these light rays. When the temperature is nearly 1000C we perceive white light (a mixture of all ways sensed by our eye) When the temperature is more than 1000C ultra violet rays are produced which cannot be sensed by our eye. The other rays gamma and X rays cannot be produced only by heating. Thus heat rays and light rays are all belong to one family called electromagnetic radiations.

- Light IS energy. You can use energy to generate heat (another form of energy); heat can excite the material to glow, and you get light. That's why you get light from bulbs, even fluorescent bulbs. Converting light back is a bit harder, but you can use light to go through photo-electric cells, and it can come out as electricity, which can be used to heat....

- You should use as much light as you need to see what you are doing. Any more is wasting resources. BTW, Fluorescent bulbs have mercury in them and should be avoided at all cost.

- Brand meaning one brand only? There are plenty actually and will depend on the use. Zippo for no nonsense lighter that will light even in windy situations, Dunhill, Montblanc or Cartier when you want to show the world how rich you are, Bic disposable lighter(or any lighter) when you always lose things or a friend always borrow lighters from you( and never returns it!). so there, take your pick depending on your personality.
- Q: when light travels away from earth, are we not travelling away from that light at the speed of light?what implications does this have?
- I think you are describing the twin paradox of special relativity, the short answer is no there are no real implications, first off photons are photons, they don't know they are traveling at the speed of light, time is irrelevant to a photon. The twin paradox is that you have 2 twins, one goes off in a space ship for a long time (traveling close to the speed of light), then comes back. What happens? If you look at it from the perspective of the twin in the space ship, then it would appear that he stood still, while the other twin (left on the Earth) hurtled off into space at great speed, so he should predict that the other twin aged less (since it was the OTHER twin that was traveling fast). On the other hand, the twin left on Earth sees the exact opposite, that the one in the space ship flew off at great speed was gone for a long time, then came back. He will predict that the twin in the space ship should not have aged for very much and will say that the time was less. OK, so who is right, since obviously it's impossible for them both to be right. The answer is the twin in the spaceship will age less. This is because we are ignoring one MAJOR aspect of the experiment...one that we didn't even mention earlier. That is that although it may appear that the twin in the space ship sees the earth twin hurtling off, the truth is that it IS the space ship twin that is accelerating, he would know (feel) this acceleration and thus know that he was the one that was traveling faster and thus would realize that he will experience less time. It's this time in the non-inertial frame from when he accelerates to near light speed and then when he turns around that distinguishes the two twins and thus this is not a paradox at all.
