- In order to be classified as metal a band does not just have to be heavy, but it also needs to include heavy metal song structures etc. Slipknot's sound is heavy, but it's mostly dropped down power chords and their structures and general sound doesn't really fit the characteristics of metal. I think the best way to classify them is alternative metal, not heavy metal, not even nu-metal (they don't have too much rap in their songs as far as I know). Alternative metal means that the band is metal, but it's stylistically different.
