The synthesizers and weird sounds not from instruments usually make you able to recognize it. Death metal is usualy caracterized by its fast speed, low growly vocals, blast beats on drums, and complex and long songs. The fast tempo allow you to recognize it. Doom Metal is slow, with low tuned guitars which kinda make you somewhat depressed.
