Q:What solar panels are the most efficient?
About 20-22 percent is about right for panels affordable by most consumers. Even then, you still only get enough power to light a couple of lights for $400-$500, and only works when the sun is shining.
Q:How much for a 8kwh solar panel system?
Figure 8 hours of sun per day, so 8 kW-hr is a rate of kW, which is a medium sized panel, probably not enough to operate your house totally, unless you have a very small unit. Averaged over 24 hours, that is power at a rate of only 300 watts, enough for a TV. Average US home use is .2 kW, which over 24 hours is 29 kW-hr, plus you need extra for cloudy days, peak demands, and to charge batteries. You have to decide off-grid or on-grid, and if you want to (and are allowed to) sell excess power to the power company. Off gird, the cost of batteries and charge controller are a large part of the cost. On-grid, you have to purchase equipment approved by the power company to match your power with the grid. Panels will cost about $3 per watt, so for 000 watts that is $3000. Double that for installation, then add in cost of charge controller, inverter, batteries, etc. The last items depend on your alternatives, see paragraph above. .
Q:Solar panel question?
i agree with Liz but have a diffrent point i think u have not calculated for the roof mounted solar panels i am giving youy a bsic understanding hope that will help you Roof Mounted solar power systems consist of solar panels held in place by racks or frames which are attached to roof based mounting supports. Roof based mounting supports include: Pole mounts which are attached directly to the roof structure and may use additional rails for attaching the panel racking or frames. Ballasted footing mounts such as concrete or steel bases that use weight to secure the panel system in position and do not require through penetration. This mounting method allows for decommisison or relocation of solar panel systems with no impact on the roof structure.
Q:How energy-productive are solar panels, compared to natural gas?
Solar thermal in commercial applications is more productive than natural gas, taking in consideration the sun must be out. the reason being is when natural gas is exposed to a heating element(boiler, hot water heater) it loses efficiency. lets say solar thermal can produce a therm of hot water, but that would equal .2 therms of natural gas using an 80 percent efficient boiler. solar being close to 95 percent efficient. No boiler can do that. now when the sun goes down, fossil fuel can beat electrically stored energy, not stored steam energy in a thermal plant for example. but that all depends on efficient steam generators.
Q:where will i find solar panel info for free?
Hey Bandit, there are some really good websites on the subject, my favorites are operated by non profit groups, I will list them below. As the old saying goes, the best things in life are free, but there is one really good exception to that rule. Home Power Magazine is the only periodical that gets into the nuts and bolts of home grown energy. We started reading it 2 years ago. A couple years after that we attended an energy fair that was listed in the magazine, ended up buying our first solar panel and wind turbine on the spot, and hooking up a small 2 volt power system for our home that year. It worked really well, we did make some mistakes, but with the knowledge and experience we gained, we were able to get into a larger system a few years later. Now our home generates almost all its own power, and we use the utility company for backup. There is a .4 kw solar array on the garage roof, and a kw turbine on a metal tower in the field behind the house. We have also installed a batch solar water preheater and have 2 wood stoves for heat. Now our electric bills are around $6 per month. If your handy at all hooking up electrical devices, you could put together a small system like we did years ago and use it to run some small 2 volt lights and electronics. We still have our little system today, it operates the cabinet lighting in the kitchen, a few radios and phone answering machine, and we have 2 volt outlets in each room. They're handy for stuff like charging your cell phone with a car cord. I would suggest looking at the websites first, and if you're really interested, go for a one year subscription to Home Power. If you subscribe, you can even use their website to look at archived articles from years past. There is even one on our small system, the magazine liked the idea so much they wrote it up. Use their search engine to look for, Small System First. Hope you find all this interesting. Take care Bandit, Rudydoo
Q:Were solar panels made by copying how plants collect sunlight?
Solar panels were not made to copy leaves. Leaves have molecules that become excited when they are hit by light. They store this energy in ADP molecules and ATP molecules. This works great for biological processes, but until we learn how to use Adenosine Di/Triphosphate to transport energy, we are better off sticking with our solar panels. They produce electricity, which we know how to use.
Q:How many solar panels?
Are you going to have anything else on electric? Water heater, Stove, Refrigerator, Dishwasher, Washing machine, lights, fans, or a barn with lights and possible water heaters for winter? If so, you may need a lot more panels than that. We use 6.8 kW of panels in a place not known for sunny days, and do all right, but sometimes have to be careful if it is cloudy for many days in a row. You may be able to get by with about half of that if you live in a sunny, southern clime. Good luck - there are lots of non electric options for other (non-laptop) appliances, so you could cut back on other stuff as well.
Q:solar panel battery size?
I'm sure that you might discover everything concerning solar power at www.okorder.com.
Q:Solar panels in the Bay Area?
I know nothing about the Bay area, I live in KC. However, I believe that solar is the best answer to alternative energy. We should have solar panels everywhere, the suns going to be shining somewhere. I propose we make gigantic panels in the deserts where the sun shines and nobody lives, and hook everybody up to the grid. They can store energy when they get a lot of sun to make up for the dark days. They are expensive to make so we should start building them one by one all over. The sun is not going to stop shining for millions of years. Plus there is no pollution from solar. So, yes put them in the bay and back here in KC too.
Q:its about solar panels?
If solar power is not practical, why do four of my friends and I have it? Actually Don M is mostly right. The factors to consider when contemplating a solar installation are numerous. For example my system will not pay for itself in utility savings in my lifetime, but I plan to sell the house soon. What I am saving on electricity costs, and the increased amount I can ask a buyer, I will come out well ahead. Cruise the Internet and look in the green search box at the top of this page, for solar panels. As you learn more, you can come back with more questions.
