- yes it is being done. i've seen adds for such a system. on the other hand, if you had a 5 sq in Lens focused on a small cell, and a 5 sq in cell, they'd be about the same. in fact, the cell might be a bit better because (A) there wouldn't be any loss in the Lens, and (B) it might be that the solar cell would use some frequencies to which the Lens was opaque. in addition, the cost of solar cells is dropping, making the cost of the mirrors or lenses uneconomical by comparison.

Instead of going with guess work on the efficiency of the panels you are considering, the people who want to sell you panels (or their website) should be able to tell you from the angle of your mount (roof?) and location, etc., an estimate of the average and maximum power available and the kWH during various seasons. This has to be known for either buying the batteries for storage or knowing the economics of feeding back into the grid, depending on the method used.

- Even the angle of a solar panel can increase it;s out put, if you point it towards the south, it will receive more light (or towards the light source if it is an artificial source) mirrors can also be place and angled around solar panels to gather and reflect more light to the panel, this is often done is solar water heating, but would work with a panel as well. Over all, solar panels are very efficient, it's our way of catching light that isn't.
