FAQ

how can i wax corten steel?
Bill summed it up pretty quick and provided a link. For some reason you are focusing on the copper content when it really is insignificant in the overall picture of the sun hitting its surface. If you could elaborate more, maybe we could offer a better answer.s
What grade of steel is best suited for use on ships. Specifically trawlers?
How big is your trawler going to be and what use, The ones you see off the Alaska Coast or a Gulf Coast Shrimper? My preference in today's economy would not make sense and that is Aluminum.....not steel at all, maybe even Fiberglass, but $$$$ talk so Steel is cheaper, but you need to know what you are doing. The designer of the hull should have specified the right /preferred grade. It today's world there are many more choices available. You use a mild steel, most often grade A or B, but some applications call for grade D. Check your blue prints and list of materials. Edit. Ok I understand. There are 2 ways to go. One is use a relatively cheep steel and use higher cost epoxy primers and paint, often requiring special surface preparation just before priming, or two, using a much higher cost steel with more chrome and nickel in it. Grades that begin with #3xxx These are weldable with rods that are available, and can be welded directly to mild steels. However these are 3X the cost. If your a Shrimper, I'm guessing gulf coast. I worked with several boat yards in the 70's installing spray urethane foam for insulating there holes. So I've been around lots of small yards from Florida to Texas. I'd call the nearest steel warehouse and ask what they would recommend. You might find what you want at a scrap yard. I've lucked out several times picking up 1/4 plate scrap$ and I'd bet the scrapyard guy would know just what you need. I know there are places to get what you need in Mobile and New Orleans. Good luck!s
Heat Resistant Chemical for Steel?
There is, but I don't know what it is made out of. It is probably some fireproof, foam material which acts like insulation. I doubt it is designed to resist abrasion however. Most things which adhere to metal surfaces are not flameproof, and those which do resist fire are not good insulators. For example, the ceramic coating of appliances like stoves and washing machines adhere very well and are fire resistant, but do not insulate. It was the failure of the steel insulation which caused the collapse of the world trade centers. The impact of the airplane tore away all the insulation on the supporting struts of the building and then the fire caused the steel to soften and break. Steel was once insulated by wrapping it in asbestos cloth and then applying plaster over this to form a shell. It did not actually adhere to the steel but it did insulate it, and was fireproof. However asbestos is a cancer hazard and a lot of old buildings are being stripped of their asbestos as a safety precaution. The asbestos can be replaced with fiberglass which is usually duct taped together.s
Question about steel studs.?
Ask a Carpenter friend where you can buy metal studs. There should be a large drywall supplier somewhere close to your area - they usually also stock metal studs and ceiling grid that sort of all goes together for contractors. You will have a choice of 20 or 25 gauge studs track. 25 gauge is pretty flimsy so I suggest using 20 gauge. Get a small box of tek screws to attach studs to track. Also get some self drilling drywall screws 1+5/8 for 5/8 thick gyp bd. or 1+1/4 for 1/2 gyp bd. I would also buy MR drywall (moisture resistant) for any work in a basement. Another tip : Buy some 1x4 composite trim boards to use for your bottom plate. Clean the slab good where you plates will go, then use some Liquid Nails hd and glue your plates down to the slab. That way you won't be drilling holes in the slab that could allow water to seep up through them. The composite trim will not wick moisture and it will keep your metal studs up off the floor should you ever have a water problem in the bathroom. Keep your drywall up off the floor about 1/2 by laying a scrap pc. of drywall against the plate before you hang the board. Allow enough room to line the perimeter of your door frame with 2x 4 vs. metal stud. It makes it easier installing the door and trim.s
Why is steel denser than wood?
Steel is basically a mixture (not the compound) of iron and carbon. Iron, by itself is an element and so is carbon. The atoms of Iron are larger in size compared to carbon. All the atoms of all the elements, smaller or larger, are spherical. If naturally a solid, the atoms of all such elements have voids as their atoms are closely packed. You can imagine a basket of oranges; you could see that void or empty space (which I am speaking about) between four or more of the oranges put together. Now, when heated to more than about 1500 degrees celcius, Iron melts and atoms in molten form increase space between themselves. Raising the teperature to 1800 degree celcius, carbon is mixed with iron. At this stage it causes the spherical carbon atoms to fill in the spaces present amongst the spherical atoms of the iron. On cooling, already dense iron becomes denser because no space is left there between its atoms. This denser form of iron + carbon has become steel in which carbon is not more than 3 to 4% of the total volume. Wood is nothing but a fallen and dried tree's part. When green and alive, tree's stem and branches have pores in there texture, which are fillled with water and other biological fluids necessary for the life of the plant. When dried all the fluids, especially water gets evaporated. and the pore are empty now. The term Density, means mass divided by volume (kg / cubic meters). Iron + Carbon (the steel) so tightly packed and Iron having very high atomic weight is surely denser than wood with just carbon and a few other elements with no significant role to play in the mass calculation; particularly if their are empty pore spaces filled with air only. Imagine the mass (which common people mistakingly call the weight) in kilograms of a peice of steel with dimensions of 1 meter cube and imagine the same for the dried wood. What do you think---which one is denser?s
Mag. Wheel (steel and aluminum info)?
Negative facts for steel wheels: (1) Not as many style choices as aluminum. (2) Rust easily even when painted or powder coated, due to rock chips. (3) Heaver than aluminum, as far as fuel economy. Negative facts for aluminum wheels: (1) More sensitive to proper torquing of lug nuts. IE torque must be checked more often. (2) Susceptible to impact damage from road hazards much more than steel. (3) Need constant attention to prevent oxidation. Are these what you are looking for? I hope so. Wingmans
What's the difference between Stainless and Clear steel?
Stainless steel is different than regular (clear?) steel because is is an alloy, or combination, of steel and other elements. Stainles steel has 15% chromium, which is very resistant to rust than regular steel. That is why stainless is more expensives
What kind of drill bit will go threw steel?
