You didn't say where you live. In some places (UK) you have to start small and work up. In other places (US) you can start as big as you like. I know they use 125s and 250s for training, but partly that's because they're cheaper to maintain and operate and also partly because in training you do all of your riding in an empty paved lot at 10 mph and big bikes are just clumsy at that speed. If you never rode on the street, only in parking lots, and never above 10-15 mph, a 125 would be all the bike you'd ever need. If you plan to ride on the street, but never on the highway, never above 50 mph, then you'd never need anything bigger than a 250. If you plan on going on the Interstate more than a couple of miles at a time, 500cc is the minimum and 650cc would be better. Personally, I don't think a 500 or 650 is too big to learn on. It's quite a bit bigger and heavier than a 125, but not that much bigger than a 250. Maybe 50 lbs. That's not as much as it sounds like. I know lots of people who learned to ride on 650s, in fact some 650s (like most 250s marketed in the US) are designed as trainers, as 'entry level' motorcycles. The Ninja 650 is not an especially hard bike to learn on. I think this is just one reason it's so popular! Almost any viable, rideable, reliable motorcycle is going to cost you at least $3k. Anything cheaper than that is probably someone's 'project' that's been sitting in the garage for 5 years and they just want to get rid of it. If it runs at all, one thing after another will probably go wrong with it and it will just break your heart. Also I'm not convinced of the advantages of ABS. It makes a bike more complicated, taking wheels off, changing tires, changing sprockets or chains all become a lot more complicated.s

Do all motorcycles have about the same braking ability.?
The braking ability of different types bikes will vary greatly. All bikes made lately will be adequate, but some types of bike are just better at stopping quickly. I have been riding sportbikes for many years now but get a chance to ride a few different bikes every season and can say that for stopping quickly they are hands down better. The bikes are made to do only three things well, but they do they do those three things better than anything out there. Sportbikes are made to accelerate, stop and corner very quickly. They are a blast to ride but sacrifice a little in comfort, fair trade off if you ask me but some choose cruisers for their comfort. Cruisers all have brakes that are good enuogh to get the job done in a short enough distance. Driving around in town or on the highway they will stop you fast enough to keep you out of trouble. Generally the lighter a bike is the faster it will stop, but that rule of thump only works if the bikes have simular braking systems. A 2 disc front will almost always stop faster than a 1 disc front, the only way it would not would be if the bike with 2 disc front breaks weighed in about twice as heavy. If you were able to follow me this far I bet you can see why a sportbike stops so fast, They have the more powerful front brakes and a very light, often a rider and bike will weight in lighter than just the weight of a cruiser alone. I really don't see how a wider rear tire can help slow a bike down any faster than a narrower one, 85-99% of the work to stop quickly is done with the front tire. If you need to just scrub off a little speed the rear works but if you really need to stop you use the front. Every sportbike I have ever had would stop from 30 mph in like 10 feet pulling the tail of the bike off of the ground. My newest bike can stop in around 90 feet from 100 mph, these bikes can stop (accelerate and corner) very quickly, so the answer is no the big cruisers have a little more trouble due to the increase in weight.s

It is pretty frequent for bulbs to burn out when there is battery trouble. Also, as you probably already know, bike batteries are REALLY touchy. They never have enough power to begin with, and they drain too easily--even just by not riding it for a few weeks. Once the battery is drained like that, it is damaged, and it will never be itself again.You will find yourself having to make sure you always ride long distances, to give it enough charge to start up the bike the next time you ride! So just always be careful to keep your battery fully charged and in good condition, for the sake of your lights as well as to avoid having to jump-start your bike. (which can cause lots of problems, 'specially if you jump from a car or truck!)s
