- You might find whether your transformer is broken with an ohmmeter between the ultor cap and a pin by trying each with the meter set to a high ohms range, with (I think) the black meter lead connected to the ultor. If you don't see a result 1st. time around, try swapping the meter leads. If you get a result, try the 24V test there. If you don't, and using his method also fails, I think you have a dud. So far as the 9V test, I think that has a fatal flaw. A digital multimeter, or usually also an analogue one, cannot respond fast enough to a single pulse. A digital meter only samples at a certain rate, and if the voltage does not align with the sampling, you see nothing. Even if it does, I think you would only see an instantaneous reading before next sample sees nothing. Apart from that, the voltage spike will be well over 200V! The object is to sort out input direction in the primary. I would suggest you sort out the primary connections, and build the circuit. I have not looked at it, but I think if you fire it up, you will either have + HV coming from the ultor cap, or nothing. If nothing, reverse the primary. DON'T TEST IT WITH YOUR FINGERS!!!s

- Last transformer I made had a 1000 volt secondary, a 28 volt primary, ran at 22kHz, and a 20mA capability. It was wound on a ferrite form and was a cube about 1.5 inches on each side. I had a lot of difficulty keeping it from shorting out. I used lots of special HV insulating tape between winding layers, and managed to get a few working, but it was difficult. It was used in a voltage doubler to generate 2500 volts DC, so the entire winding had to withstand that voltage. Remember that there are only a few volts between consecutive turns, but after a hundred turns, that builds up to hundreds of volts. .s

How do I determine if a transformer is beyond the normal temp range and is at risk of failure?
- The temperatures you measured seem hot but might be acceptable for the type of materials used to insulate the coil inside the transformer. Only the designer of the transformer could tell if it's too hot or not. One rule of thumb : for non industrial electrical devices, the outside temperature of the device should remain at a temperature that lets you touch it without feeling pain. But one thing is sure: high temperature is not good because the transformer will age faster and it's less efficient (and therefore generates more heat). The transformer can overheat for 2 reasons : either your load is above the nominal rating or the transformer is not able to cool down as designed (usually because it's in an enclosure which doesn't let the heat get out). If you are indeed getting 750kva from it, then you are definitely at risk. That's more than 3 times the nominal rating. I would be surprised that it lasted for so long. If you can't reduce the load (best option), try to let more air flow freely around it by removing stuff around it. Last resort try cooling it down by forcing cool air to flow around it with a fan. But this can be tricky because the bottleneck of the heat exchange could be inside the transformer so the outside might get cooler and the inside could remain very hot.s

- As others said, only worry about the voltage ratio. That determines the turns ratio. Current doesn't enter in to this equation yet. The minimum number of turns on the primary is dictated by two things, the saturation flux density and magnetizing inductance. Flux density is proportional to the applied voltage, inversely proportional to frequency and effective area of the core. You'll need to know the saturation limits for the core you are using. You also need to have a minimum numbers of turns to minimize the no-load current which relates to magnetizing inductance. My rule of thumb is the inductive reactance must be 5x the maximum expected load resistance, however, for a AC mains transformer, this is often a hard number to quantify since the load can be near zero. Next is wire size. You will need to consider proximity effect losses as well as DC losses. You'll find that there is an optimum wire size for the windings, but for a 50Hz transformer, you'll probably use a wire diameter smaller than optimal for a low power transformer. I suggest reading about this in Ferrites for Inductors and Transformers by Snelling and Giles. You may need to make compromises to meet your needs. This is where the current supplied by the transformer comes in to play, maximum heat loss expected. While making your own transformer is educational, for power mains transformers, you are better off buying one or scrapping it from an old piece of equipment.s

- You do not say what country you are in, so cannot give you links to an exact transformer. You are looking for a 220 to 110V step-down transformer. I am assuming you are going to plug the microscope into the transformer, rather than actually replacing the transformer in the microscope? The rating should be at least 10VA, personally I would go for at least 15VA for safety. That is quite a low rating and if you are lucky, you might be able to find a transformer meant for electric shavers really cheaply that should do the job. There is just one thing that concerns me, are you sure the transformer will only be powering the light and nothing else? If so, you will need a transformer that will handle a greater load. Somewhere on the microscope, or the PSU, or even it's box, there should be a rating Label, you can take the power supply rating from that. It is NOT true that VA Watts, but for something needing so little power, it should be near enough to give you the minimum rating. Good luck!s
