Q:How much does 000 square feet of solar panels cost? This is for a pool with dimensions 75ft by 25ft? How much will it cost including installation fee and the water heater?
My Father-in-Law had around 300sqft of solar panels installed for the equivalent of around ?3000 or $5000. These were just the cheap and relatively inefficient black plastic tubes that were installed on his roof. This was in South Africa where the labour rates are quite cheap. The system works okay and heats a 40ft x 20ft outdoor pool to over 30C in the height of summer. Rather than a pool heater, I think it might be good to look at an air source heat pump to help heat the water in Autumn/Winter when you don't get enough sun to heat the pool. These will be expensive (over $5000), but they will use less than 30% of the electricity of a standard electric water heater. Just the solar panels could cost you $5-20K including fitting.
Q:The Physics club in our school is trying to convince the Board of Ed to install solar panels in our school, and i was just wondering if anyone with some experience or real expertise in solar energy. I need some points about their usefulness some real pros and cons on maintenance, etc. Anything will help. Personally i would be perfectly for the idea, but i heard that the overall cost of installing them is much higher than the cost of the energy saved and government subsidies, but ive only heard about this.
You have to approach it as an investment. Ignoring the cost of an inverter for net metering, if we consider a 500 W panel installed for $0 a watt which is $5,000 and consider an average of 8 hours of usable sunlight per day, and at a rate of $0.0 per kWh (schools probably get $0.03 per kWh) then the panel would be saving $2.7 per month in electricity. Considering that the panel has an expected lifespan of 20 years, that would give you an internal rate of return such that the monthly rate satisfies the equation: $5,000 = $2.7 * ( ( - / R^24 ) / ( - / R ) - ) By binary method we get R = 0.99588342. Taking this to the 2th power to annualize it we get Ra = 0.9570 which means that we are getting an annual return of -4.83% per annum so investing in the solar panel is the same as making an investment at an interest rate of -4.83% per year. True interest rates are low and you only get about .3% per annum by putting money in a CD but that still beats investing in solar panels which gives you a negative return on your money. Solar panels need to get a lot better before they are a good investment.
Q:We are thinking about useing solar panels for our house.Does anyone know about solar panels? If so could you please tell me some information on them, and the cost for a home,to install them.
solar panels are device that convert sun energy into electric energy by physic and chemical effect.solar panels price is high, but you will save your late electricity bill,it is cost effictive.
Q:I want to know how to hook up a Solartech SPM020P-R, 20W Solar Panel to a single outlet that you can but at a store.
That solar panel puts out about amp (in round numbers). If you are talking about a 20vac outlet, you'll have to send the output of the solar panel through an inverter. That brings it up to 20vac. 20 watts at 20 volts means you'll only be able to draw 0.6667 amps. With an inverter at 85% efficiency, you'll only get about 0.4 amps. That would barely light a CFL. 20 watts of power at 7 volts = amp (in round numbers) 20 watts of power at 20vac = 0.6667 amp (in round numbers) Power (watts) = current x voltage. If you increase voltate, you must decrease current to get the same watts. Watts is the common denominator in power measurement.
Q:I mean like bread is made of wheat, what are solar panels made up of?How are they manufactured?
Solar panels (aka photovoltaic panel) are most often made up of thin wafers of crystalline silicon or cadmium telluride. As photons from the sun enter the photovoltaic cell, electrons are freed from the substrate when are then collected by wires that run throughout the panel. And as we know electrons=electricity!
Q:Why should I have a Generator if I have Solar Panels.....?
Usually, a generator is more cost effective than a battery backup system for your solar panels. Most grid-tied solar arrays are connected to the grid without batteries. My company has installed well over 00 solar arrays for residential and commercial clients and almost none of them had battery systems with them. Many clients asked to see the costs and after that, they agreed that a generator seems better, especially if there is access to fuel readily available. Also, unless there is a battery system, the solar inverters will not operate when the electricity goes out. This is a safety feature, but it keeps you from using any power at all from the panels when the grid goes down. This explains the utility interactive solar inverters compared to the stand alone generators.
Q:Do higher watt solar panels last longer, efficiency-wise? 3 installers gave me quotes with 3 different sunpower panels. The 225, 25, 20 watt panels. Whats the con and pro's of the different wattages?
You should get the highest efficiency at the lowest price. Typically, the Sunpower brand panels have the industry best 23% efficiency depending on the model. You have to look at the specification very closely and if you don't see it, ask. There are two types of solar cells Polycrystalline and Monocrystalline. Polycrystalline cells are inferior to Monocrystalline. You will also see that different kinds of panels have different output voltages.Since you will be wiring your panels together and connecting them to either a power inverter or a charge controller (if you have battery backup), you need to make sure the panels and controller work together for maximum efficiency. Be very careful when engaging an installer especially when they are trying to sell you the equipment too. Mostly, these are not engineers and you will end up with whatever they have in stock without regard for the most optimal design.
Q:I know what they do and how they work, but at this point they're expensive, don't always produce enough electricity as needed, and can't be used when there's no sun, as in half the day. Wouldn't wind power seem so more efficient? Or if they do use solar panels, how about putting them in the desert. But I really believe that research money should go to fusion generators since that's the future and the answer to our problems. Which is best in your opinion?
They're more efficient than nothing, or fusion for that matter since fusion hasn't gone anywhere in the last 30 years. Since most energy is used during the day time when its light out solar panels will do pretty well. In most habbital places on the planet its light out for a good part of the day while wind doesn't blow steadily in most places.
Q:Hi, I want to put some solar light in my yard, and wondering if a 00w solar panel could work for a few 3w dc lights....do i need a battery so they run at night, if so how many lights do u think i can run/ also i see elading solar light
3 w for 2 hours/night is 36 watt hours. You'll get about 500 watt hours/day from your panel on the average, which for a 2 volt battery is about 40 ampere hours. You can get an 80 amp-hour sealed gel cell battery to charge with this panel (with a suitable charge controller). You want to size your lights so the battery can provide three days of light without discharging it more than 50%, so that's abnout 600 watt-hours/3/36 = about 4 orf 5 lights. Cost for this system woulkd be over $500. The advantage of the self contained light is they use a lithium or nickel battery rather than a lead acid, so it can run totally dead without damage (unmlike a sealed lead-acid battery). That would be a far cheaper way to go. DK
Q:I was looking at thin flexible solar panels as solar panels 500w a option to upgrade a 20w solar panel I have permanently mounted to the roof of a home made camper van.Why I was thinking flexible is at just 2mm thin they can be glued down and being flexible they will follow the contour of the rounded shape of the roof of my camper (boxy standard solar panel spoils the lines a little)Another reason is no glass to brake when traveling on dirt tracks(though I am surprised mine hasn't broken yet after thousands of km on corrugated dirt roads). Finally there is a weight saving at only /3 the weight or less then a standard glass panel. There are different grades of flex PV some of the more expensive ones are very flexible with extremely thin backing at around .5mm The ones I was looking at are cheaper and at around 2mm with a thin flexible aluminum backing.$250 is about the going rate for 20w OKorder job. Below is a pic of a smaller one 60w or so.Has anyone had any experience with them?
