Q:I work security at a lumber mill we normally don't go in the boiler building but we check the boiler valves across the property on our patrols. I'm just curious how a boiler works and what one is or what it's purpose is?
A boiler is basically a giant kettle. Water is heated by burning something, perhaps gas, perhaps oil, perhaps waste timber as it's on site, to produce hot water and steam. This is doubtless used in various timber related processes, such as making particle board, plywood and so on, and may well also heat the buildings.
Q:The boiler is about 20 years old. I turn on the gas and power and turn up the thermostat, the pump and damper blower come on but I get no ignition spark. how long should it take to spark up and what should I test first - it worked fine last season.
It should purge (sends air through the burner to clean any excess gas, that maybe left from the last fire) after you turn it on before it looks for a spark. See it there is a small rod going into the front (by the burner). Flame Senser (looks for the spark, or ignition). If that is hanging or missing it will shut down right away then re-purge. If it's not that it could be a faultly gas valve, not opening up when the boiler calls for heat. Good Luck!!
Q:One, two, three boiler stove are equivalent to the boiler operation Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ, which category

Q:I have a Dunkirk boiler with a Honeywell L8148A aquastat that just allows me to set the high end temp. I keep it at 180. But it won't let me set a low limit for when I want the heat to kick in. (it seems like it's been short cycling. I had an electrician come and he tested everything, thermostats, zone heads, you name it, and evreything is in working order). If I buy a low limit controller, will it allow me to do this; to set a low range and not have the boiler starting up every few minutes? Thanks for your help.
The reason you have an aqua-stat is to keep the water in the boiler right around boiling. So you don't have to wait so long for the boiler to heat the water before it turns into steam. If anything just turn the aqua-stat down. But remember that it will take longer for the steam/hot water to get into your system. Because it has to heat up. I've never seen a steam system with one (it maybe possible). - I think the dual controls would counter act each other. -One would tell the boiler to stay at 180 degrees the othe would tell it go go down to 100 degrees.
Q:I used a boiler to heat milk (the one with the coil inside) after a few seconds it started smelling bad like burnt food, i immediately drained the milk inside i noticed the coil was burnt it had this cracked up texture .. why did this happen? i had no idea it was wrong to use other liquid products with this heater besides water :(
What happened is that the milk solids congealed on the coil and insulated it so that it overheated. If the cracked-up material does not clean off or if any part of the coil is now exposed, the boiler is toast and must be discarded.
Q:how do you bleed the boiler?
To properly bleed a boiler takes time and Patience. Your boiler should have an auto fill valve to let water in. Hopefully you also have boiler drains on each zone. These drains will have a connection to hook up a garden hose. Direct the garden hose to a drain in the floor, or somewhere that will get rid of the water. Caution, this water is not only hot(180-200 Degrees) but can be very black as well, so choose carefully were you drain to. Turn one of your t-stats up so the zone you are working on comes on, you can feel the hot water by placing your hand on the pipe, again be care full, it is very hot. if the zone is open but not flowing, slowly opening the drain should push the air lock through. do not open or drain the zone to quick, you do not want to let the boiler go dry, bad things happen then. When you feel the hot water come back to the boiler through the pipe you know you have flow. You can hear the air in the pipes as it circulates and open the drain slowly to purge the air out. You need to do this to each and every zone in the system. It is advisable to have an experienced HVAC tech. do this if you are not comfortable, and watch him, ask questions. This is your system, you should know how and why it works. Good luck.
Q:I have a Vokera Compact 29HE boiler in a house with 6 people. (rated B). Currently my combined Gas and Electricity bills are ?2600 per year - just over half being gas. Will changing my boiler greatly reduce this cost? I don't think my house is particularly warm in the winter, i have the heating on a timer in the morning and evening only so the weekend in the day its freezing. Any ideas/suggestions would be most welcome.
The utility bills don't make any sense unless you reference them to a location. Nome, Alaska vs. Sao Paulo, Brazil, for example. If your current boiler is 80% efficiency and you get one that's 90% efficient, you can expect to save 10% of your heating costs per year. If that happens to be 130 Pounds? It will take 20 years just to recover the cost of a new boiler. The money would be better spent on reducing your energy losses, such as better windows and doors, more insulation in the attic, and other things that an energy audit can find. Make sure you get a blower door test and an infrared scan of the house. Then you can really save some energy, possibly in the 20%-30% range.
Q:My heating just suddenly stopped today and the red light went on. I pressed the reset button, like I have done before, but then the heat only comes on for about 10-15 seconds before stopping again. It's a small boiler in my flat - the brand is Glowworm. Anyone have any suggestions about something simple that can be done (by someone who doesn't know much about these things)? What timing! A cold front's coming in from Russia this weekend, and my landlady is hard to track down.signed,Freezing in London
This little red button is a warning that something is going wrong. In your case it sounds like the Boiler is over heating, this could be either a sensor fault or more than likely a pump fault. You need to call in a corgi registered engineer as there is no DIY Fix.
Q:The total heating BTU of my radiators totals to 62,000 BTU'S.Can i get away with installing a 60,000 BTU boiler as it is also going to run the hot water.. or should i go for the next size up?? (preferably vaillant boilers)Thanks
as a vaillant boiler engineer this is the minimum i can recomend 80000 btu's is approximate to 24 kw if you add water to your heat requirement you will need around this. vaillant appliance suitable to you are - ecotec pus 624 (sealed system) i.e no heaer tank in loft but radiators and water cylinder ecotec plus 424 (open vented) as above with header tank in loft and pump outside boiler ecoted pro 24 (combi boiler) ecotec plus 824 (combi with flap) these are minimum requirements an all these modes have higher powered machines
