Unless you have had constant problems, just replace the gear.Order the whole assembly(which incudes the driveshaft and top bearing). And do not skip installing the worm gear. Doing this I see no reason why the new gear should not last as long as the original.

Q:I would like to have the door to my private office connected to an electronic release mechanism so that from my desk I can push a button that would send a low voltage signal to release the door from an electronic magnet or another device that would allow the door closure to close the door. This would allow me to shut the door to my office from my desk without having to physically get up and close my office door.

They could use pneumatics but mostly they use small motors to move them. If you want to build a door opener you can use a cylinder that can open and close it. Sliding side ways you will mount one end onto a rail that keeps it straight and the other end to the front of the cylinder shaft. You then use an pneumatic valve with either a pilot operated control via pressure plate to stand on or an electric solenoid getting a signal from a motion detector. then air is applied to the front of the cylinder to move it towards the back and then apply pressure on the back to move it forward. Use a timer to delay it though so it doesn't squash anyone. You can mount the cylinder differently for different movement. Otherwise you get pneumatic linear slides as well that Festo makes or you get pneumatic motors that can move a ball screw to move the door. Phone a Festo or Bosch agent in your area for specific products.

Q:I recently purchased a 2000 Grand Am that had the stereo stripped out by the previous owner. It appears that there may have also been an alarm installed as well that was stripped out. When I recieved the vehicle the automatic door locks did not work and still do not. When I try to use them I do hear a click noise coming from the interrior fuse box. I need to know where I should start looking for the reasoning behind why it is not working and how to go about fixing it. Any ideas?

.The clicking you hear is the relay snapping shut. That really narrows the problem down. At least with that you know the remote, the receiver, and the coil feed is working. You need to get to the relay and see if it is getting power on the hot side (not the coil). If so then see if it is making contact to send the power to the locks. Then you'll have to just trace it to the doors. I seriously doubt both of the solenoids (part that locks and unlocks the door) went bad at the same time.

First okorder to find some places. These repairs can be major or minor it really varies. Also depending on your home, check your fuse box, circuit breaker set-up and make sure the door system is actually receiving power.

Q:I have a Honda odyssey 2004 and lately I have been having problems with the back doors sliding. Sometimes when I try to close the doors with the remote like I always do, one of the back doors will not slide on its own. Do you know why that maybe happening? I thought maybe when I took it to get an oil change at sears that they mistreated the car. It wasn't doing that before then. Yea I try to close it with the remote and it gets stuck, and then it doesn't close unless I try a couple of times or pushing it manually. Its annoy because if you close the door manually then you can't lock it with the remote. Any thoughts on why its doing that?

Its nothing they did during an oil change. These auto doors are known for problems, even Chrysler Town and Country's and Ford vans with auto doors. Check the track to see if something is in its path. Could even be the motor or cable binding.
