- Q:I have a USB powered external hard drive. The cable that came with it has to plug-ins for the PC. I know the fat one provides power so I use that one. I would like to know what the other skinny one is for.I have seen other people plug both in when using it and it worked fine for them. I am using just the fat one and it works fine for me. - Two sizes are the same connections, standard and mini. Use whichever fits your computer.

- As you used the phrase The wire that was included for the subwoofer, I'll presume that we're talking Home Theater in a Box here. As someone above mentioned, sub frequencies can use a lot more energy. In a larger system where you are consistently running several hundred watts over longer distances, a larger wire would probably be benificial. For a HTIB system such as yours the wire that came with it would be more than adequate over the short run that would typically be needed. Having said that, there is nothing wrong and nothing will be damaged by going to a larger gauge wire. Just not a lot of benefit.

- The welding cable has lower voltage (<40Volt) but a large current. The welding cable used to have lower insulation Resistance compared to the power cable. That is why it is not recommended to run the welding cable in same tray to the power cable

- No, the PoE switch will initiate the connection with a low voltage signal to determine if the device at the other supports PoE or not. If not, it doesn't apply a current.

- A dodgy power cable can very easily singe or burn the power socket on the computer. In general, the lighter the cable, the more dodgy it is. $2 is nothing - I would buy a more expensive cable. The cents you save isn't worth it when your house is on fire. It's impossible to know whether your power supply or other computer components suffered any damage because of the electrical fire. You could try testing with a multimeter, but you should probably replace the power supply at a minimum.
