Q:I want to build a Darth Vader helmet/mask. Sculpting is no problem, neither is building the vacuum former, but every web link I have found just tells me what kind of plastic to use, not where to buy it.
Google your own address then Map then Search Nearby and Plastics - Sheet. This should give you places that will sell you many kinds of plastics and will cut down from full sheets (which are 4x8 ft in US) Call them and ask about types and cost. Some specialize. In Dallas Texas, Regal Plastics is one such.
Q:the dots are throughout the entire sheet which allow one to make straight lines when a blank sheet is placed over the plastic grid sheet. 1st time I seen one was in FLORIDA when a cabinet designer was laying out a kitchen and was makin straight lines without a ruler I asked him how he was able to do that an he showed me what I described above. can any1 help it will make my job alot easier.
There are cutting mats that are used for cutting fabric that may suit your needs. Look for something that is self healing. They have a large grid pattern mark on the surface.
Q:In the stores, adhesive scrapbooking embellishments are usually stuck to a clear sheet of plastic in their packaging. What is this material and where can you find it in bulk or large sheets that can be cut down. Someone told me to try acetate (transparencies), but the adhesive stuck permanently to that material and could not be easily removed. Are there different kinds of acetate or is there something different I need to be using? I have a product that needs to be stuck to this material and this product will be sold so it must look professional...so don't tell me to tear the plastic out of my kid's Barbie doll packaging.
I think that what you are looking for is called release paper, or release liner. You might also want to look for glassine release paper. Alternatively, some sprays might be available for you to make any or most papers into release film. Wax paper is also commonly used and more readily available, although you will not get that clear professional effect you want. I have added a couple of links for more information.
Q:Can plastic sheets be cut to size?
Yes, plastic sheets can be cut to size.
Q:What is the maximum width of plastic sheets?
The maximum width of plastic sheets can vary depending on the manufacturer and specific type of plastic. However, in general, plastic sheets can be found in widths ranging from a few inches to several feet.
Q:Maybe 48in X 48in
Try a local art/craft store and look for clear acetate sheets. For larger pieces look in the phone book for plastic suppliers or similar. Most of them will sell to public. Home centers have clear acrylic but it may be thicker than what you need.
Q:im trying to make a plexiglass longboard skateboard out of plexiglass
I would recommend using a polycarbonate like Lexan or Hyzod instead of acrylic resin products like Plexiglas. They are considerably stronger, yet easier to work with. I think a 3/4 inch thickness would be lots if you went with Lexan, but at 4 feet long, any plastic sheet is going to be bouncy (Plexi will snap). You might have to edge it with something rigid to fix that. Usually anything over 1/4 inch (~6mm) is special order, but you never know, a local sign shop or glass shop might have some cutoff for you.
Q:Do plastic sheets have any impact on energy efficiency?
Yes, plastic sheets can have a positive impact on energy efficiency. They can act as an additional layer of insulation, reducing heat transfer and preventing drafts. Plastic sheets can also help in maintaining a consistent indoor temperature, thus reducing the need for excessive heating or cooling. Additionally, they can serve as a barrier against moisture, preventing condensation and potential energy losses.
Q:Are plastic sheets resistant to chemicals commonly found in laboratories?
Yes, plastic sheets are generally resistant to chemicals commonly found in laboratories.
Q:Can plastic sheets be used for boat windshields?
Yes, plastic sheets can be used for boat windshields. Many boats use acrylic or polycarbonate plastic sheets as a cost-effective and durable alternative to traditional glass windshields. These plastic sheets offer excellent clarity, impact resistance, and UV resistance, making them suitable for marine applications.
