- Q:I am redoing a room in my basement, and I discovered that the previous owners glued down almost every inch of the carpet. The plan right now is to replace that carpet with new carpet. We tried scrapping and pulling the carpet up...but the process is almost too slow to be worth it. Does anyone have any tips or any suggestions on how to get around this? We are open to doing a different kind of flooring as well.
- Start in a corner by grabbing the carpet with the pliers. Gently pull back slowly, as to not tear through the carpet. Once the old carpeting is completely pulled out; set it aside for later. Use the scraper to remove the remaining dry carpet glue from the floor. Removing the glue is pretty simple, but there is a way to do the job right. There are many industrial solvents made specifically for this purpose. These products can be purchased at you local hardware store. These products are chemicals that contains solvents to dissolve the glue...read the directions on all chemical bottles prior to use.

- Q:I have carpet with dog urine stains and the like. When I use cleaners my carpet is either stained darker or not affected. The even bigger problem is that my carpet is white. If you know how to remove stains from white carpet or have any tips on how to eliminate the odor, they'd be greatly appreciated.
- Well, first i'd try a carpet cleaning machine...you can rent one, i know in my hometown you could rent them from the local grocery store. But things like that are getting pretty affordable soo you might be able to find one for cheap, which may not be a bad idea since you have a dog, and since your probably not planning on getting rid of him you will probably have to clean the carpet again in the future. If using a carpet cleaner is out of the question, then i'd suggest using white vinegar or hydrogen peroxide, the stuff in the brown bottle from the drug store. You probably have a bit of both in your home already. Definately stay away from using chemicals not meant for carpets, i learned that lesson when i was 12 and had a kool aid spill on the living room carpet. My mother still is'nt quite sure how it got a hole in it..lol...anyway. Make sure that what'ever you decide to use, you test a very small spot in some corner or somewhere out of site, just to be sure that it won't make it worse, or act in a negative way with your carpet.

- There is a product builders use for new houses. It comes in big rolls and is adhesive on one side and sticks to the carpeting. Just pulls off when you are done. It's about $11 a roll and they have it at Lowe's and Home Depot. If that is too expensive, then get plastic painters' drop cloths. They are clear, don't get ones that are too thin, and just tape the sides to the baseboards with painters' tape. Not very attractive but will save the carpet. They are really huge and can do a whole room.

- Q:Okay, a its getting colder ive started rugging my horse again, but theres one slight problem. He' terrified of them. It never happened before, but for the past couple of weeks the only way i can get a rug off him is by undoing the straps and letting him spook while holding onto the rug, and then putting it on i have to have very skilled aim and try to get it on while he is running in circles.This isnt happening because this is his first year of having a rug, he has had them for all 14 years of his life, its just ridiculous, and its not like the rug is different in any way at all. Its not my method of putting on/taking off the rug either, no one at my stable can do it without him spooking. Just wondering though, is there anyway i can desensitise him to this? - heis just being silly and the more he does it and gets away with it the more frightened he will become. Get a long rope and put that through a secure ring so that you have him tied by holding the rope in your hand. Take an old large towel or material and keep throwing that over his back and neck. Take no notice of him freaking out and just continue to do this until he accepts it. Then progress to the rug. Just throw it over his back and keep doing so until he stands and accepts. Keep hold of the rope so he cannot dart off, do not allow your heart rate to change, just keep singing or whistling whilst you are doing it all. When he tries to dart forward keep the rope tight so that his head is right by the ring then let him looser when you put the rug on or off. He must learn that he cannot just run away from the rug and that A) you are in control and B) no matter what he does you are going to continue to throw the rug on and off until he stands correctly.
- Q:I am trying to be as 'green' as possible while decorating my house. In addition, I love the look of textured, natural stuff. I looked at the sisal and bamboo rugs, but with small children on the floor all the time - they just are too rough. Is there anything else out there?
