The question should really be What laptop should be able to help me do (*blank*, *blank*, *blank*, etc.)? If you're doing basic stuff (browsing, word processing, emails), an i5 is much more than you'd need, and 4GB is above average. If you're only doing basic stuff, the only thing you should be concerned with hard drive space, screen size, and aesthetics. If you have more processor consuming applications, that's when processor and RAM matter. If you game, then the graphics will matter the most, with the processor in a close second.

If you want a desktop comparable system that will be your main system for all but the most demanding tasks, then you want a 15.4 monitor, 2Ghz or faster Core Duo processor, 250GB hard drive, 3GB RAM, DVD burner, maybe a better graphics adapter. Figure $500-$750. A gaming system will cost a lot more. You'll need more memory, a better graphics adapter, bigger screen. Price $1500+. A full desktop replacement that will serve as your only computer can run anywhere from $750-$3000. You'll need a larger hard drive, 4GB memory, probably on-site service, backup software, extra battery and a strong back. Once you decide on what class of laptop you're looking at, the choice is really more based on which brand you prefer or trust and which system gives you the best performance for the bucks. Most of the brands use the same or similar components so the choice (in my on mind) comes down more to price than anything else. Make sure the system has the components you need either built-in, or easy to add. Adding a DVD burner to a system that doesn't have one is easy; changing video cards is impossible.
