- You okorder / If you are planing to build an off grid system or a grid tie system, it should be wired by an electrician. At the lest by someone that knows what they are doing. If it is a grid tie system you will need the local building inspector to sign the paper work before the public utility will allow you to hook in. - The other responders have given partial information. The electricity in your house is 20 volts AC and the solar panel will produce DC voltage. If you plugged in the solar panel into the wall, the solar panel would be destroyed, possibly with disastrous results. If you connected the solar panel to a DC to AC inverter, there are also dangers. The solar panel unless very large will not produce enough power to make a lot of AC, for every amp of 20 volt AC, you require more than 0 Amps of DC voltage. So most small solar panels are used to trickle charge a 2 volt battery used in backup situation. The problem is that the house AC and the inverter AC have to be exactly in phase or again you have disastrous results. If they are exactly 80 degrees out of phase, the wires now are carrying 240 volts and you will burn out the inverter, and possibly cause a fire. There are systems that will synchronize an inverter to commercial power so that you can feed the power back to the grid, but these are more complicated. If you want to use the battery and solar panel to run some lights during power failures, then you can connect the light to the common terminals of a switch, but the switch must be a break before make switch, which means that when you throw the switch the common is disconnected from the one source before it is connected to another source. - Hi, In the UK solar companies will fit them for nothing. The company gets the government allowance (called feed in tarrif FIT) and you get the benefit of the reduction in your power bills. The solar company make better money than the householder,BUT if the householder is in most of the day it could be most beneficial if the energy is used while the panels are generating, this means the householder is not paying for the power from the grid. Your biggest problems are probably going to be mechanical stress (you want stranded wire instead of solid, to avoid breakage) and dealing with the size of larger wires. 8 gauge speaker wire may be a good optimum. 2.? You need a diode.? If you're charging NiMH or NiCd cells you're going to have about .25 volts/cell; you can charge up to 3 of them in series with a 4.8 volt panel.? The solar panel is a bunch of diodes itself, but they're leaky in the reverse direction; the diode prevents the batteries from discharging themselves back through the panel.? You want a Schottky-barrier diode, because the forward voltage drop is about 0.2 volts instead of 0.7 volts for a regular silicon rectifier.? This gives you maximum current output from your panel.
