- Q:How do I clean the grout on my tiled floor. It has become quite discoloured over the last two years, especially in the kitchen. I live in a company apartment and it is very important that it is kept sparkling clean. There are very pale, large, limestone tiles throughout with matching grout. Thank you.
- You have to be very careful because if you use a harsh product it will remove the seal and the grout will crumble.You may want to use a grout cleaner from Home Depot or some such place.You also may think about resealing it so it stays clean.
- Q:About 7 years ago I had new tile put in all around my bathtub. I knew I would not like cleaning this tile grout. It is way too much work now that I am a senior lady. I would love to replace this tile with something that has no grout needed. Other than Formica (Laminate) can anyone think of another product I can have installed without grout lines? Thank you for your suggestions.

- Q:Can ceramic tile be applied over my existing formica counter tops? They are in good shape, just ugly. They are not molded, but the formica is not loose anywhere and would probably be hard to remove. Anyone have any experience with this sort of project?
- I would opt to remove the old counter top and replace it. You can prepare the surface for tile but those grout lines are what bug me they get dirty because food and debris gets caught and its hard to clean them nothing like a smooth surface.
- Q:We bought the tile. Our wall has new drywall behind (unpainted and clean). We are putting the tile from above the backsplash to under the wall cabinets. Can you please answer my questions:1) Do you prep the walls with anything? We bought this tub of stuff called Thinset... Is this the actual adhesive or is there something else used to put on afterward?2) We are doing our longest wall with counter and sink/window then corner and over to counter and stove then counter. Where would the starting point be? Corner or one wall?3) The wall cabinet on the open end is about 1/2 inch in then the base cabinet right below. If we start the tile from the bottom, when you get to the top, the tile will hang out from the wall cabinet by the 1/2 in. Do we use a straight line from the wall cabinet or base cabinet and it be off either way? 4) The tile is not coated or shiny. Once they are applied to the wall and then grouted and wiped clean, do you apply any coating?
- This is a long question. First it is not good to lay tile on drywall your best bet is to get the rock board for tile it is not that expensive. Take out the drywall where the tile is to go and replace it with hardibacker board. Just pick a side but it is best to start at the bottom when you lay the tile. Make your corner is square or your tile is going to be off. I am not sure about question 3 but you will have to cut the tile to fit. Use a level and try to cut to fit as you go. There is a little room to that you can play with but try to keep things close. Unless your tile is rough or there are a lot of holes in it, there is no need to seal the tile. The grout needs to be sealed. In the kitchen bacteria will grow in the cracks so put a coat of sealer on. Take your time and it will work out

- Q:I am tiling my kitchen and My house was a prefab. and OLD. The plywood used was 1/2 (I measured it). what thickness of backboard/cement board should I use for under the tile and on top of the plywood? I was thinking 1/2 backerboard/cement board so there is 1 of subfloor under the tile. Do you think this is enough? Also, I am tiling around my cabinets, what do I do about the dishwasher? Do I tile around it? If I tile under it, it won‘t fit in the spot then. I was going to tile around it... I do have room to tile under the fridge though. There is space above.
- I am a tile repairman specialist. Use 1/2 thick backer board. the trick is that you install it with the cement screws that are made for that backer board. Never use dry wall screws. Remove the stove and refrigerator and tile by those areas. Do not tile under the dish washer, you may not be able to remove it at a later date. Tile up to the dish washer's removal panel, don't go pass it. Use a modified thinset mortar to tile your kitchen floor because of the high traffic. Glue will not support the floor and your tiles may crack in time.
- Q:OK here is my problem. I want to switch my bath tub to an all-tile shower and wonder how to do it. So far the tile were set onto a cement board that was itself put on top of the drywall. I am wondering if this is a common thing. From all my research, it looks like tile should be on the cement board, but there is no use for extra drywall behind it. It actually makes things tougher because you need some sort of corner tile instead of normal bullnose since the cement board and the rest of the wall are not at the same level.My second question is: is there an order to do all this i.e. should I make the shower pan (sort of rubber sheet filled with cement), before or after I install the cement board on the wall. Is there a specific angle used for the drain?Thanks in advance for all your tips.
- Tile looks great but is a real problem to keep mildew free. We lived in Houston for 20 years and had a tiled shower, it was a constant battle. We now have a cultured marble shower. Mildew is not a problem. I would not have any other type of shower. It is always clean and just a little spray with one of those new spray products and there is no soap scum to deal with either. It is less likely to have leak problems as well. If you are going to live in the house for a while, go with the cultured marble.
- Q:I am doing a research project at school on erosion, and one of the members on my research team said something about underground tiles that run water into the nearest body of water. We have been trying to locate a source, or ANY piece of information on this subject, but have failed. Is there anyone who can help us?
- These aren't erosion tiles, they are drainage tiles. Do a web search on tile drainage and you'll find out all you need to know about the subject. BTW, tiles and tile lines are just underground pipes with holes in them, used to lower shallow water tables. It wasn't clear to me that you understood this, so sorry if I'm pointing out the obvious.
- Q:We have recently had our bathroom refitted, and tiled floor to ceiling with large ceramic tiles in a brick pattern. However now finished it is obvious that they are uneven. The tiler said it is the tiles. Is this likely or is it just a bodged job - he re-platerboarded the walls prior to tiling so they should be flat?
- Most tiles are made to be flat and there are some that aren t. On occasion ( and I m not defending your tiler) tiles can be warped and uneven. Especially when you get into the bigger sizes or tiles that are a bit cheaper. Porcelains tend not to do this but unfortunately some times happens in ceramics. I d have to see a bare or uninstalled ( several tiles) and look at them. So if you have extra tiles look carefully at a hand ful. Set them on a flat surface , look down the edges or use a straight edge on them. Like I said, I m not defending him or her, it does happen and no amount of adjusting will fix a warped tole. - Q:my bathtub tile peice just fell out and i am wondering what material i should use with it to put it back into place. Any ideas?
- Yes!! Scrape as much of the old glue away from the wall since anything you add will make the tile stick out farther than it did before. Next let it dry if its wet. Than apply some loctite adhesive to the back of the tile. Push the tile in until it is flush with the other tile. About four good size lines of glue will do it. Around the edges and then 4 vertical lines. This will allow the glue to expand and not hold the tile out. Wipe off any extra glue now . It hard to get off later. Let dry over night and than buy a matching grout to finish the job, Follow the instruction on the box. Good luck
