Q:I‘m looking to replace a ceramic tile floor in my kitchen with a different style ceramic tile. The contractor says I have two options. He can either lay the new ceramic tile on the old, which will be cheaper than bringing up the old tile but then the floor will be raised 1 to 1 1/2 above current level. Or, he can take up the old ceramic tile but then he‘d have to remove the old layer of plywood and put down a new layer, which will be more labor-intensive and expensive. Is there any other issues regarding these two scenarios that I should take into account?
Best to rip it out and start new. And start with a new sub floor made for and the proper thickness for tile.. NEVER, EVER use a thin 1/4 luan or ply wood.. This is totally inadequate for tile and goes against all tile hand book guides such as the ATC and TCA guide book.Minimum substrate thickness for tile is 1 1/4 not the 1 as suggested. Thus you must use 1/2 board or backer board ( properly installed) to meet minimum standards for stability for tile. There are other methods to install but this is very common way. Going over the old with new tile is a possible option but tile setter need to know what their doing. Thus raising floor only thickness of the tile and thin set. I d never go over it raising it that much. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
Q:is it hard to do a tile back splash for someone that has no experience it is a small area in the kitchen
Oooh! Oooh! I saw something about this last weekend on the DIY channel, and I plan on doing it, myself, in our kitchen, too! I scribbled notes while I watched--here's what I've got: Measure the space for the backsplash. If you are tiling over an uneven surface (like over old tile) you will have to create a smooth surface over what you have. To do that, you will need to install some trim to the uneven surface of the wall for studding to provide a place to affix backer board, and then affix backer board over that trim. That will give you an even surface for your new tile. I don't have notes on thype of wood or measurements for that studding, but if you ask at your hardware store, which is what I will need to do, I'm sure they can guide on that. You fasten the studding to the wall along the top and the bottom of your area to be tiled, and then in between those top and bottom studs at intervals sufficient to support your backer board without buckling when you press on it. Maybe the hardware store can advise on that distance, or you can just test it as you go. You fasten the studs to the wall with a nail gun, and then the backer board to the studs with a nail gun. Now you've got a new surface. Next, spread your plaster onto the backer board. I'm assuming you are buying your new tiles in sheets. Set your sheets of tile onto the plaster (don't remove the fronting paper from the tiles yet), starting in the center/bottom and working out, and up. When the tile is set, use a damp sponge to wet the fronting paper and peel that off gently. Now mix your grout, and apply that over the tile with a trowel. Wipe excess group from the tile faces, but be sure not to wipe away from between the tiles. You are finished! Luckily, the space for my backsplash is a rectangle without any oddly shaped areas besides that. I know I can do this, with some advice from the people at my hardware store. Hey: We can DO this!!!! Good luck!
Q:I need to re-set some tiles on a roof that have slipped and replace some others. Also, I need to re seal my flashing around my vents. What am I getting into, and how hard is it to work on tile roof?
the tricky part to working on a tile roof is staying on it. and not cracking any additional tiles. usually when i repair a tile roof i set up scaffolding there are a bunch of reasonss . the tiles sre heavy and hard to handle on just a ladder, the scaffolding offers a nice work area, and most important its alot safer, you can go to any rental store and rent scaffolding, when resealing around flashing and vents use a rubber butyl caulk for longer durability
Q:and people will rip up the 12X12 tile floor and replace it with smaller tiles? Just need a few opinions.
I don't think that particular size tile will be outdated but certain styles will. The size of tile should depend on the size of the room. That's why you see smaller 6 tile in bathrooms (well when bathrooms used to be less than 700 square feet...) and the large 12 tiles in the kitchen. Everyone used to have that smooth white tile on their floors, now it looks like something from your Grandma's Florida retirement home. People are all about the granite countertops now. Sure they're the style now but in 10-20 years they will look just as sad as the avocado laminate of the 70s and the small tile and grout patterns of the 90s. Wall panelling, omg let's not go there! America is all about the bigger, better and newer you know...nothing remains appreciated for long anymore. Basically the size is fine, probably going to be around for a while. But I wouldn't go with a crazy ultra hip style if you plan on selling or not resenting your home's outdated look within the next 10 years.
Q:I have a tile floor in a basement bathroom. These are small 2 inch tiles and I would like larger 8 by 8 inch tiles on the floor. Do I need to remove the old tile or can the new tile be laid right over the old tile? The subloor is concrete slab.
You could if that is what you really want to do. You will need to spread a layer of leveling cement over them to give you a nice flat surface to work from.
Q:i just bought this house and my kitchen floor tile is all cracked it was put on a wood serfice. i need a quick fix because redoing the whole kitchen needs doing but is not in my bugit at this time. can i cover it with linoleum with out it also cracking before i can remodle?.
Sure. Lino does not crack(unless you give it 50 years of aging) But the lino on a roll is the best route to go. Not tile squares so much(you can do it that way but it is a bother).
Q:how I can install ceramic tile on a wall and what tools do I need to do so? Any other tip that I should know about it to do a good job would be appreciated.
no way you can learn from these idiots. get a book at the library or hire someone.
Q:I‘m redoing a sunroom in florida and the floor is in good condition but white textured vinyl floor tile prof laid, I want a cork tile look and wondered if there is a plastic type paint to do the job. It will not get a lot of shoe traffic. TKS.
i doubt it...i wouldn't take that risk
Q:i would like to paint over the old yellow tile on our bathroom walls, and of course in the shower. is that possible, and how can i do that?
There are companies that make removable sticke em' stuff. For example, I'm renting and hate the trim..I was thinking about peeling on a patter I like, and removing it when I leave.
