- Plaster indicates an older house. My guess is that the tile also is raised about a half inch above the surface of the wall and there is a nice bull nose tile that curves into the wall. If I'm correct thus far then there is no plaster under the majority of the tile. Back in the day, the plasters would attach lathe down to just below where the top of the tile would be then plaster only that. Then the tile setters would attach a heavy steel mesh the rest of the way down and strike mortar over top to create a proper backing for the tile. When you go to remove the tile it will come off with great difficulty and in large chunks because of the steel mesh, which by the way is nailed to the studs. By the way, the tile you have can be painted or new tile can be installed over it.

The guy there reccommended installing a backerboard on drywall first. Is this difficult for a first-time DIYer? Several of the tutorials I‘ve found online install directly onto the drywall. - Q:I live in a split level 3 story house, the outside of my house is concrete, the walls inside are concrete and the floor is tile. Several weeks ago the tile in our laundry room cracked, as if something was pushing up from underneath. This morning the exact same thing happened in our top story living room. We had tilers come out to re-tile and they said that this happens all the time, but the concrete underneath the tile was untouched and un-warped in any way. Please help? What can we do to fix this from ever happening again?
- 1. If there are cracks under the tile, the cracks will just keep happening. 2. I have had success in fixing this problem by using a rubberized carpet cement rather than the unforgiving thinset. The adhesive stretches rather than the tile cracking.

- American Oleans Satin Glo ( matte finish) and Satin Brights bright , shiny ) line had some bright green tiles . Also Interceramic and Dal Tile had a line of them. At one time Florida Tile had some too. Google all these manufactures and look at their lines. Each site will have a store locator to find a realtor neatest you by putting in your zip code. - I ve worked with tiles for over 20 years and I find no difference in tiles from different areas such a Italian , Indian .USA, Brazil, China etc. They all have excellent and garbage tiles. The vitrified tiles is a type of tile as is ceramic and porcelains. Usually a bit harder bodied and the the sizing is better on vitrified tiles. Get what coloring and style fits your needs.
