Q:Which is better to graduate from a crib.... Toddler bed or twin bed (with railings of course)? And how do you know when a toddler is ready to graduate from the crib? I'm getting ready for a new baby so I'm pondering this stuff early.

Skip the toddler bed, by the time they're too big for a crib, the toddler bed wont get them very far. Might as well save your money and just get the twin bed when its time. The time to move them out of the crib totally depends on the kid. My oldest was in his crib until he was almost 3 (and he was a big boy!) but he never disliked it. Our youngest had to move out of his crib when he was 22 months because he figured out how to crawl out of it. If you want to move your toddler out before your next baby is born, go ahead and move him, at least a month before hand so he has time to get used to it. And get a door handle cover so he can't get out and roam the house! (trust me!)

If the children are under a year old, they cannot have any pillows, comforters, or blankets in their bed. If they are over a year old, just make sure that the bedding has no long ties on it. You'll probably want to go for pillows that aren't too high, and a lightweight quilt, comforter, or duvet, layered with blankets so you can adjust if they get too hot.

Bed bugs were probably more prevalent back then. Making a great comeback today! Not sure why a parent would tell their child to watch out for bugs though. Why not say watch the monster under the bed!

We switched our daughter over at 16 mos. when she started trying to climb out of her crib. We skipped the toddler bed and put her in a twin size bed. We didn't use any rails. Her mattress actually sits on the floor between the bedrails so if she did fall out, she didn't fall far. She's only fallen out 2 or 3 times. She does really well with it and now refuses to go into a crib or a pack n play. We skipped the bed rails because they are going to have to learn to sleep without them eventually. You always run the risk of them falling out after you removed the bedrails. My husband and I didn't have bedrails, nor did our parents. Personal choice I suppose. Hope this helps. Good luck.
