Q:I have an 1985 cadillac fleetwood hearse and the water pump is shot to hell. where do get a good cheep one.: Autozone, O'Reilly's, Napa, or Pep Boys. Most water pumps are anywhere from 30 - 150 bucks for any car.

Q:I recently bought a 1992 Honda Accord. It has high mileage but the records kept on it were impecable up to about the last 3 years. I have read that you need to replace the timing belt/water pump every 80k miles. However; I do not know when it was changed last. The Only record in the book on the subject was back at 90k miles. That was the first time they had the timing belt changed.So How do I know its time to change it again? The car now has 199k miles. I do not want to do unnecessary work before time, however; I also know that the affects it will have on the engine is great if its not done within the right TIME! Thanks!: A water pump is mostly pretty obvious when it is going/gone it chirps it squeaks and your temperature will usually be higher than it usually was [not always]. As for a timing belt... they are relatively inexpensive, the labor isnt that bad since the car is VERY easy to work on, and it is difficult to tell when one is needed since the most it will make is a whining noise when its getting weaker, only sometimes though. This is hard to hear too. Best advice I have is to just get a couple appraisals/estimates, or have a friend who is mechanically savvy take a look to see if he/she can tell if the belt is worn to the point where it needs replacing. I had a timing belt done for $120 parts and labor on a 91 accord (same car)

This brand has a known issue with the water pump if ever run dry as both the impellor and the housing can be damaged instantly. The pump should always be replaced as a full assembly, housing, seals and impellor, as detritus can easily block water galleries and that requires extensive work to remediate. The thermostat should be checked and replaced at the same time. Worn and damaged impellor material can easily end up through the block, head, thermostat etc. and that must be checked for as well. The lower cylinder can be down on compression caused by local overheating due to this and mud, sand and corrosion reducing water flow. An engine that very much must be flushed and looked after after all use - that includes all the larger models with this brand. They are quite a good engine, but seem very heavy for the output to me - particularly compared to lifting a two stroke on and off....

Q:I just had my water pump/timing belt replaced and oil change. When the pump failed, white smoke was coming out, which I figured out to be coolant from the smell. Now there is smoke coming out from under the engine, which I believe to smell like oil. Also, the temperature gauge goes up to the halfway point when I am at a stoplight or idling. Like a loose bearing feel, etc? you can check for pulley noise, pulley wobble and coolant condition as a precursor to it's failure, but even if it passes that inspection, it may fail in 1000 miles (example). that's the nature of consumable components. ------ since it costs 300-400 in labor to do those individually, it behooves one to put them both on the same maint schedule. replace both at same time. needed or not. every 90,000 miles. and this is a non interference type engine. no engine damage will occur as a result of belt failure alone. FYI, since it's not an interference engine, if this be an autotrans, you could go longer between belt changes as autotrans have smoother torque apps. purdy much constant torque. my V6 has over 200,000 miles on the belt. water pump too. and i have pristine coolant and no pulley noise. and i'm pushing my luck. i run the risk of a towing bill.
