The resistivity of copper is ρ_Cu = 1.72 x 10^(-8) ohm - meters, whereas that of aluminum is ρ_Al = 2.82 x 10^(-8) ohm-meters [1]. Assuming that the wire runs are the same length L, the resistance in the aluminum wire will be R_Al = ρ_Al * L/A_Al, where A_Al is the cross-sectional area of the aluminum wire. The resistance in the copper wire will be R_Cu = ρ_Cu * L/A_Cu. If we want the same resistance in both wires, we require R_Cu = R_Al: ρ_Cu * L / A_Cu = ρ_Al * L / A_Al A_Al / A_Cu = ρ_Al / ρ_Cu. Since the resistivity ρ_Al of aluminum is higher, the aluminum wire must have a larger cross sectional area to yield the same resistance. To make this precise, suppose the wires are cylindrical. Then the cross sectional area is π(R_Al)? for the aluminum wire and π(ρ_Cu)? for the copper wire: π(R_Al)?/π(ρ_Cu)? = ρ_Al / ρ_Cu R_Al/R_Cu = √(ρ_Al / ρ_Cu) = √(2.82/1.72) = 1.28 The aluminum wire must be 28% thicker than the copper wire in order to provide the same resistance.

Q:i have a 98 ford taurus... can anyone give me a diagram of the wires that come off the radio, like wut colors r which speakers. i need to knw so i can wire it my cd player cuz i cant get a wire harness around here..

Well for starters the wires that are at the radio are not the speaker wire, they are power, ground and data wires. The speaker wires are back at the factory tuner box in the drivers rear of the trunk behind the carpet. The tuner box is a silver box that is mounted to the rear drivers fender well and has the input and output for your speaker wires as well as your antenna. metra electronics makes a harness that plugs into the factory plug and that you have to run from the rear of the car up to the dash to put in an aftermarket radio. this harness also includes the antenna wire with the adapter for the factory antenna end. You also need to get a dash kit that will replace that factory dash piece so it will accommodate the new radio. It is a metra part number 99-5715. Hope this helps

Q:I m wondering if there s a Neutral Wire in this picture (yes I turned off the breaker to get this photo). I want to put in a quot;Smart Light Switchand they require a Neutral Wire. I ll have an electrician do the work, but want to make sure the wire exists first.

It's hard to tell from the switch and the color of the wires, but you also have an outlet in the same box as the switch. The outlet will have a neutral and, if it's on the same circuit, you should be able to use that.

Q:My home is wired for the thermostats with two wires (red and white). I have acquired a new thermostat that requires a Red, White, and Common wire. Using the white wire in that position will power the unit up but it won't trigger the heat. Is there something that can be put in line that will allow this thermostat to work without rewiring the house?

T-stat wires are usually left loose in the wall, no staples, so you can easily replace it by pulling a new wire through with the old one. First try to get an idea of where the wire goes. Get an estimate of total length and go to home depot and purchase 18-3 t-stat wire. They sell it in 25 feet, 50 feet, 100 feet, 500 feet, or by the foot. Compare prices and get enough to make a continuous run. Older 2 wire Tstats used a mercury or spring switch to simply connect the two wires together (24v + and sl return). Your new Tstat needs a common because it is being powered by the same feed that activates the unit. (So you have 24+ 24- and sl return) When you attach your new wire to your old wire be sure to actually strip the outer coating of about 4 inches or so and fold the wires around each other to get a good strong bond, and then tape it tight to keep it as small diameter as possible.

Q:How do you wire a 2 wire smoke detector directly to an alarm (no panel). The terminals are numbered 1,2,3,4 and the instructions say that 1 is for DC+ and 2 is for DC-. How do I wire an alarm so when the detector senses smoke, the alarm goes off? Thank you.

That's DC alarm ,mean you should connected in to 9 volt battery. There are 4 wire alarms that are design for serial alarms. Smoke alarm it's required ,without AC power act and also With AC power act .mean if AC power go off then system will respond on battery power .
