Machinery is a thing that makes or produces something and equipment is other necessary pieces. So for example a forklift is equipment but not machinery. It is necessary to move material from the docks to the machinery for processing into product. So in a manufacturing business you have your machinery for production and equipment to support it and sales. Machinery = drill presses, benders, punches, forges, lathes etc. Equipment = Forklifts, pallet trucks, telephones, computers, vehicles, racking etc.

Q:Like what are the major duties for a machinery repairman in the navy? My boyfriend is going to graduate soon from boot camp and is going to be a machinery repairmen. He didn't really get into details. But i just wanna know what do they do? What is their basic day as one? Do they have more sea or shore duty? And would anyone happen to know where he may be stationed?thank you very much!!!Have a good one!!!

Considering that every ship in the NAVY has machinery on it and that if it breaks down while at sea it has to be repaired and in some cases right then I would say that sea duty is in your future for most of your time in the navy. Shore duty for the Black Boot Rates is there but to get it you are usually a short timer or a lifer soon to get out.

Q:Can you just tell me what you did as a machinery repairman? Where was your first station that you went to? Or where you assigned directly to a ship? Did you ever get stationed at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard? Did you ever go overseas? Were you on the ship more or on shore more? And finally but not least when you were deployed how long were you usually deployed for?i know i have alot of questions but its something im interested in and no one has given me a straight answer. First of all, a Machinery Repairman in the Navy does not repair machines. You will make parts for machinery? An MR in the Navy is a Machinist. You will be operating machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, drill presses and engraving machines. An MR has an average sea/shore rotation of 3.5 years sea to 3.5 years of shore. However, this changes according to your rank. I was an MR for 21 years. I spent half my time assigned to a ship. I rotated to shore about every 4 years. Every ship has at least one MR depending on the type of ship. Destroyers and cruisers have one but possibly 2 MR's. Carriers have about 10 MR's. Repair ships (only 2 left in the Navy) have around 30 -50 MR's. MR's may also have collateral duties in damage control or stand watches in engineering spaces.

Q:How does operating machinery under water complicate mining procedures?

Well it severely limits the type of power source you can use, corrosion of metal parts becomes a major factor, manipulation/positioning of machinery becomes extremely complicated, health and safety is even more of a problem, costs increase exponentially
