- Q:If you buy everything you need for a grid-tied solar set up, can you install it yourself or is it required that a professional installs it?
- Solar panels have to be installed by a professional in order to get the government rebates. Also the systems must meet state and local electrical codes. Most modern inverters will not turn on unless there is live power from the MAINS, so a ultility company is NOT required for any installation anywhere. There are plenty of electrical contractors and speciality solar contractors out there to help you to make sure that the system is properly designed with the correct components, properly installed, and legally certified. Also many states require a permit that may have a large fee before any installation and may not allow the homeowner, especially for city homes, so it is best to check first. You might be able to get away with it if you live in the country, but consider the safety as well. See if you can work with your contractor to get the materials that you both agree upon as well. They can help guide you based upon their experience. Also shop around for pricing as the panels are now going below $ per watt !

- My Father-in-Law had around 300sqft of solar panels installed for the equivalent of around ?3000 or $5000. The system works okay and heats a 40ft x 20ft outdoor pool to over 30C in the height of summer. Rather than a pool heater, I think it might be good to look at an air source heat pump to help heat the water in Autumn/Winter when you don't get enough sun to heat the pool. These will be expensive (over $5000), but they will use less than 30% of the electricity of a standard electric water heater. Just the solar panels could cost you $5-20K including fitting.

- While I understand Search's answer, because it was also my first reaction, am I wrong in thinking that this is some sort of science fair project, for which you need to power a solar panel indoors as though it were being illuminated by the Sun? The question at least makes sense in that context. Solar panels provide modest power even from room lighting, sometimes calculators are powered by small panels, but that is a tiny amount of current. . You'll probably do better by asking this question (a bit more clearly) over in Engineering. It's not really an Astronomy Space question, though there may be some crossover between the two groups of users. Meanwhile, while some white LEDs can be pretty dazzling to the eye, I don't know how much actual power they are pulling down compared to what you'll need the panel to generate, but I don't see why it shouldn't work. - Unfortunately installing Photoelectric Solar panels on your school would probably cost more than the entire school budget. In order to make this sort of proposal you would need to have some hard numbers to show exact dollar amounts of costs and benefits. You would need multiple quotes from companies that install solar panels and information from the electrical company that would have to tie the system into their grid. This is a HUGE undertaking. If you really want to reduce carbon emissions, suggest ways to reduce the energy use within the school instead of converting to solar. Better windows, doors, and roof insulation. If you have a leaky roof, fixing that would get rid of water damage and better insulate the school thus saving energy. Suggest plans to reduce electrical usage like having computers go into Hibernate mode after 0 minutes, turning off lights in rooms that aren't getting used, etc... Many people are fooled into thinking that solar power is this awesome free energy source. IT is NOT. Solar panels are great for powering small items or for getting power when you have no other way of getting connected. However it takes MORE electricity to create a solar panel than the solar panel will ever produce in it's ENTIRE lifetime. Do some research into the production of silicon crystal and semiconductors and find out how solar panels are made. Until the technology improves greatly, solar is not a green power source other than generating money.

- if the cabin is in the woods it is unlikely to get enough sun to power solar panels 45 watts will not even power a light bulb and although it will trickle charge a battery it will not charge then enough over daytime for much else, most tools are a minimum of 550 watts, you really need to be in arizona for solar power to contribute effective wattage
