- Q:so I am trying to drill holes in stainless steel shelving to hang something but my drill wont make any more than a small dent in the steel. I bought a bit for hard metals but it didn't do any better. I have an admittedly small drill (9.6v). is that the problem? do I just need a more powerful drill? any serious advice is appreciated. thanks
- I've had a similar experience attempting to drill heavy steel. Most stainless steel formulations are even harder than mild steel. First, you will need a much more powerful drill. A 9.6v cordless is just not going to do the job. You will want a large corded drill - I'd recommend a half-inch bit chuck. If possible, use a drill press - they typically house very powerful drills, and make holding and aligning the drill much easier. Second, you will need a very, very hard bit. Carbide-tipped is critical. Third, you will need a good deal of patience, depending on the thickness of the steel. Good luck.

- The iron ,nickel and chromium are (mainly) in solid solution with one another -- all the atoms are completely intermixed on the (FCC)crystal lattice . If you heat stainless steel until it melts , you will simply have a liquid solution of all the components --the components do not separate out. The only practical way to separate the metallic elements would be to make use of their differing reactivities -- re their oxides , nitrides , carbides etc -- and then gradually refine their compounds .

- Sorry okorder /... I hope that link works but as you can see you dont want to use 303.304.316,410,416,430 You can get away with 301 but would be best to use 440. It kind of sounds like your a home shop guy. It would be best for you to make a knife out of a1 or d2 tool steel. with these steels you can torch heat them to a red hot heat where a magnet will not stick to them. Then let them cool slowly in the air. After that you can temper in a oven around 400f. This will a very hard long lasting knife. Check OKorder for good steel prices. A1 and D2 are not stainless but they are the best for a home shop. If you go stainless you can buy preharden material but you will have to grind everything. You can also pay someone to harden your knife but dont plan on it being cheap.

- I never use anything tighter than modified...mostly use imp. cyl. . to my knowledge any i.c. or mod. choke is ok for steel shot....some of my chokes are marked steel ok or no steel some actually are marked as to no steel bigger than *^*..usually bigger than BB like F or T. Steel is lighter than lead so it looses its energy quicker, therefore it is recommended to use 2 shot sizes bigger than the equivalent in lead...4 shot lead use 2 shot steel. With steel, your choke will perform like it is one size tighter. Early season I use imp. cyl. later season mod.( it is still best to pattern your gun/choke/ammo to see what and how it performs at different distances)
