Q:I bought a bathroom fan timer and tried to install it. It has four wires and the wall switch circuit has only 3 wires. What do I do?
3 Wire Switch
Q:i need to know if my wires are hooked up right
You didn't give us much to go on. There are at least 5 different color combinations in 10 conductor control wire I know of. There may be more that I've never used. Or your installer may have used two 5 conductor wires dropping of two for your T-stat.
Q:Hi,I'm looking to change the outlets and the switch and light fixture in a bedroom of a home built in 1948. The outlets are original to the home I think. Will I have to fish ground wire throught to the panel box for my new receptacles? Or just install new 2 slot outlets? Why the different looking wires? Is the older wire copper with a silver colored coating to indicate being neutral or is this an old aluminum wire? The hot wire is red plastic coated and looks modern to me.
In '48 your house won't have a ground wire as you found out. If it is wired with BX cable ( metal clad) you can see in the basement or crawl space, the ground is actually taken to the outlet by the metallic casing. Then all you would have to do is get a bag of ground wires with screws already crimped on them at Home Depot called Greenies. You screw them into one of the holes inside the box and attach the other end to the ground screw on the switch or outlet. The red casing you are describing actually sounds like red electrical tape wrapped around deteriorating wire in the box as the other wire looks raggy. The wire you see that looks aluminum MAY be aluminum someone added in the '70's when al wire was used, but BOTH would be replaced and there would have been a ground wire. I don't know why it looks silver, but I have seen old wiring like that and it is usually copper. If you see the BX cable you are good adding the ground wire, if it is a silvery looking cloth casing, then install new NON-grounded receptacles.
Q:Hello! I'm going to re-wire my speakers and eventually get an amp to power them. For normal quot;door speakerswhat wire size would you recomend to run to them from an amp? Also, is 3ft far enough away to run my speaker wires from the amp power wire? Thanks in advance!
I would use 16 gauge. you can go a little bigger, or smaller. The biggest issue you will have ( vehicle depending ) is getting that wire thru your accordion boot and molex ( the rubber thingy that protects your wires, shaped like an S, and goes from the chassis to the door) <~ that's not talking down to you, but if other people read this, they will know exactly what it means also :D Unless your running a ton of power to your doors, you really don't need thick wires. As to the other part, It's not the speaker wire you need to keep away from your power wire, it's your RCA cables.. The rule is power wire goes down the battery side of the vehicle, and the rca's and remote turn on, go down the opposite side, if possible. That way you don't get alternator whine( when you accelerate, a high pitched whine will play thru your system, and make you Bat-S#it crazy :) Good Luck!
Q:My renter took apart a timer that was hooked to a ceiling fan because the timer was clicking loudly. Now, I just want to simply install a normal on/off switch in it's place. There are two sets of wires coming into the box. One set has a red, white, and black wire coming from it. The other set has just a white and black wire coming into the box. I'm sure this is relatively simple for someone who has wiring expertise. How do I wire a normal light switch to these wires?!?!
you ought to positioned the switching in earlier the low voltage transformer. If the light fixtures are all under pressure jointly, there's no way you have gotten the skill to preform this activity. you will ought to positioned the two light fixtures on one transformer and have the switched with or via the feed wires to the transformer. The final mild will must be via itself transformer and switched additionally with the a hundred and twenty volt feed. I woul hire an electrician a stable one, A union guy on the part or somthing. no longer your girlfrinds uncle chuck..
Q:I know the ground wire takes unused electricity to the ground but what is the purpose of the neutral wire?
The neutral returns unused electricity back to the source where as the ground provides a pathway for an electrical short to return back to the panel and then to an earth ground.
Q:why use a large gauge spark plug wires
Wow, both answers are wrong and one that took engineering classes bashing on somebody that didnt. Both answers sounds dumb and foolish Spark plug wires. 99% of the larger wires is ONLY the outside jacket thats larger. Not the inner wound wire. Stock will be a 5mm to 7mm size. This is the size of the outside dia. An 8mm, 8.5mm, or 10mm plug wire will have the same size inside dia but with a thicker jacket on outside. This thicker jacket only helps to prevent nicks, rips, cuts in jacket that gets down to wire, also makes wire able to withstand a higher temp from under hood parts For the Mech. Eng.. Please tell me how you could ruin the spark plugs for too much voltage by using larger wires The voltage output in set up the coil. If the coil puts out 30,000 volts DC, then putting a 0 ga. wire on it will NOT change the amount of voltage that gets to the plug. A wire don't add voltage to the coil. Now the plugs resistance can and will change. A stock type wire may ohm out at 3,000 ohms per foot. This will keep some of the voltage from reaching the plug. Better, performance wires will ohm out at 50-400 ohms per foot, but this has nothing to do with the thickness of wire. Its the design and the carborn wound inner wire Lower ohms is better
Q:I have just bought a Clarion CZ500 and am trying to run a remote wire to the amp. Where do i connect the wire to the head unit? Please Help
Well newer head units have a blue with a white stripe but older are solid blue so if u got blue with stripe it goes there if not solid blue
Q:I recently re-wired my house with 4 wire telephone wire. They all meet in the attic. How do I wire them together and is there some kind of junction plate I can use? Additionally, I did also wire my house with Cat6 wire, but would like to keep it strictly for Internet.
(links just for reference, from search engine results)
Q:I'm doin this thing where I need to connect some wires and one part uses Apple iPod headphones. Inside those wires, they have insulation. I burnt the wires so the insulation would not be in the way. Will the wires still conduct the electricity? Or will I just need to find some other headphones without insulation to do this with?
The undertaking of the conductors interior the cable won't regulate, however the insulation would burn and allow the conductors to the touch, making a short circuit. this could circumvent the I Pod working and would harm the output amplifier.
