Aluminium foil acts as a total barrier to light and oxygen (which cause fats to oxidise or become rancid), odours and flavours, moistness, and germs, it is used broadly in food and pharmaceutical packaging. The purpose of aluminium is to make long-life packs (aseptic processing|aseptic packaging) for drinks and dairy goods, which allows storing without refrigeration. Aluminium foil containers and trays are used to bake pies and to pack takeaway meals, ready snacks and long life pet foods.

Aluminium foil is widely sold into the consumer market, often in rolls of 500 mm (20 in) width and several metres in length. It is used for wrapping food in order to preserve it, for example, when storing leftover food in a refrigerator (where it serves the additional purpose of preventing odour exchange), when taking sandwiches on a journey, or when selling some kinds of take-away or fast food. Tex-Mex restaurants in the United States, for example, typically provide take-away burritos wrapped in aluminium foil.

Aluminium foils thicker than 25 μm (1 mil) are impermeable to oxygen and water. Foils thinner than this become slightly permeable due to minute pinholes caused by the production process.

Aluminium foil has a shiny side and a matte side. The shiny side is produced when the aluminium is rolled during the final pass. It is difficult to produce rollers with a gap fine enough to cope with the foil gauge, therefore, for the final pass, two sheets are rolled at the same time, doubling the thickness of the gauge at entry to the rollers. When the sheets are later separated, the inside surface is dull, and the outside surface is shiny. This difference in the finish has led to the perception that favouring a side has an effect when cooking. While many believe that the different properties keep heat out when wrapped with the shiny finish facing out, and keep heat in with the shiny finish facing inwards, the actual difference is imperceptible without instrumentation. The reflectivity of bright aluminium foil is 88% while dull embossed foil is about 80%.

Aluminium (or aluminum; see spelling differences) is a chemical element in the boron group with symbol Al and atomic number 13. It is a silvery white, soft, ductile metal. Aluminium is the third most abundant element (after oxygen and silicon), and the most abundant metal in the Earth's crust. It makes up about 8% by weight of the Earth's solid surface. Aluminium metal is so chemically reactive that native specimens are rare and limited to extreme reducing environments. Instead, it is found combined in over 270 different minerals. The chief ore of aluminium is bauxite.

Aluminium is remarkable for the metal's low density and for its ability to resist corrosion due to the phenomenon of passivation. Structural components made from aluminium and its alloys are vital to the aerospace industry and are important in other areas of transportation and structural materials. The most useful compounds of aluminium, at least on a weight basis, are the oxides and sulfates.

Despite its prevalence in the environment, no known form of life uses aluminium salts metabolically. In keeping with its pervasiveness, aluminium is well tolerated by plants and animals. Owing to their prevalence, potential beneficial (or otherwise) biological roles of aluminium compounds are of continuing interest.

Coal (from the Old English term col, which has meant "mineral of fossilized carbon" since the 13th century)is a combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock usually occurring in rock strata in layers or veins called coal beds or coal seams. The harder forms, such as anthracite coal, can be regarded as metamorphic rock because of later exposure to elevated temperature and pressure. Coal is composed primarily of carbon along with variable quantities of other elements, chiefly hydrogen, sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen.

Throughout history, coal has been used as an energy resource, primarily burned for the production of electricity and/or heat, and is also used for industrial purposes, such as refining metals. A fossil fuel, coal forms when dead plant matter is converted into peat, which in turn is converted into lignite, then sub-bituminous coal, after that bituminous coal, and lastly anthracite. This involves biological and geological processes that take place over a long period. The Energy Information Administration estimates coal reserves at 948×109 short tons (860 Gt).One estimate for resources is 18 000 Gt.

Coal is the largest source of energy for the generation of electricity worldwide, as well as one of the largest worldwide anthropogenic sources of carbon dioxide releases. In 1999, world gross carbon dioxide emissions from coal usage were 8,666 million tonnes of carbon dioxide. In 2011, world gross emissions from coal usage were 14,416 million tonnes.Coal-fired electric power generation emits around 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide for every megawatt-hour generated, which is almost double the approximately 1100 pounds of carbon dioxide released by a natural gas-fired electric plant per megawatt-hour generated. Because of this higher carbon efficiency of natural gas generation, as the market in the United States has changed to reduce coal and increase natural gas generation, carbon dioxide emissions have fallen. Those measured in the first quarter of 2012 were the lowest of any recorded for the first quarter of any year since 1992.In 2013, the head of the UN climate agency advised that most of the world's coal reserves should be left in the ground to avoid catastrophic global warming.

Coal is extracted from the ground by coal mining, either underground by shaft mining, or at ground level by open pit mining extraction. Since 1983 the world top coal producer has been China. In 2011 China produced 3,520 million tonnes of coal – 49.5% of 7,695 million tonnes world coal production. In 2011 other large producers were United States (993 million tonnes), India (589), European Union (576) and Australia (416).[9] In 2010 the largest exporters were Australia with 328 million tonnes (27.1% of world coal export) and Indonesia with 316 million tonnes (26.1%),while the largest importers were Japan with 207 million tonnes (17.5% of world coal import), China with 195 million tonnes (16.6%) and South Korea with 126 million tonnes (10.7%).

Q:I don't need to boil it but I need the highest difference in temperature in 20 minutesWhat material should I use? Any ideas?
A parabolic mirror with the water glass suspended at the focal point, all of which points at the sunAn equal capacity convex lens would weigh in at many many poundsThe mirror is the easiest to make and weighs the least for its ability to focus the rays from the sun into a pointPaper mache would work quite well to make a parabolic form, lined with aiuminum foil, shiny side out, of courseEver seen a satellite dish for something like dishtv on the side of a house? Take the receiver off the rod, line the dish with aluminum foil, shiny side out, and put the glass at the end of the rod at the focal point where the receiver wasThe thing about the dishtv shape is the focal point is off center so the object at the focal point does not cast a shadow on the reflectorCasting a shadow reduces the amount of light that is capturedMythbusters on The Discovery Channel did a show on the burning ray of Archimedes in which several people holding mirrors all focused light on a single spot so see if the myth was true that Archimedes came up with a way to set ships on fire at a distanceIt seems it might have been feasible for several hundred soldiers on shore holding polished bronze mirrors actually COULD have collectively focused enough sunlight on a ship at a distance to maybe start a fireI like the paper mache form lined with shiny sided aluminum foil because it would be very light and could support itself and be quite largeThe larger the reflector, the more light gathered, the hotter it gets in any given period of time.
Q:Can aluminum sheet withstand heavy loads?
Indeed, the durability of aluminum sheet is such that it can endure substantial loads. Renowned for its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, aluminum proves to be an exceptional selection for endeavors necessitating both resilience and load-bearing capacities. Notably prevalent in sectors like aerospace, automotive, construction, and marine, aluminum sheets are frequently employed in scenarios involving weighty burdens. Moreover, the innate corrosion resistance of aluminum further fortifies its capacity to bear heavy loads for extensive durations. Nevertheless, it is crucial to take into account the precise grade and thickness of the aluminum sheet, as diverse alloys and thicknesses yield differing load capacities.
Q:Im trying to make something out of aluminum, what is the best way to melt and shape it?
Depends on your preferenceG1 Devastator is mine.
Q:What does exterior wall imitate aluminium paint have? Imitate aluminium plate paint is fluorocarbon paint?
The exterior walls are painted with aluminium and plastic panels, and only fluorocarbon metal paint is used. The fluorine content determines the service life;The construction technology of fluorocarbon metal paint is relatively complex, and the price is more expensive, generally including the construction is roughly equivalent to more than half the price point to use aluminum plate;
Q:Obviously, we do produce steel, aluminum and other metals, although do we produce it in large quantities? Or is it a small industry compared to simply exporting raw materials like alumina and iron ore which would be processed overseas? Is it any cheaper for the raw materials to be processed overseas? For example, as I understand it, producing aluminum requires large amounts of electricity in the process of electrolysis to form pure aluminum metal from the alumina ore. With countries such as Japan not having access to cheap coal to produce electricity like we do, is it cheaper to produce aluminum here in Australia?
Our bauxite/alumina/aluminium industry is pretty well integrated and unlike iron ore to steel, a great deal of refining is done in Australia. There are seven alumina refineries operating in Australia producing mostly smelter grade alumina for both the domestic and export markets. Australia is the world's largest producer and exporter of alumina and aluminium, producing 19 million tonnes of metallurgical (smelter grade) alumina in 2007 with an export value of $6.2 billion of alumina and $5.6 billion of aluminium. We are also the largest exporter of bauxite with exports of 60 million tonnes of with an export value of only $200 million. Australia's ample energy supplies together with generous power price concessions make it attractiveto refine bauxite here. Steel is another matter altogether and we make only around 7.4 million tonnes annually, mainly for domestic use. In contrast, in 2007 we exported 261.4 million tonnes of iron ore for a value of $15.5 billion. There are some plans afoot to turn this around so that far more steel is produced here to take advantage of our energy resources and the decreased cost of shipping steel rather than unrefined ore. That can only be a good thing for Australia.

Q:we had nasty smell coming from my fairly new top loading dryer, checked the vent going outside and found dead mouse, how do i get that dead mouse smell out of my dryer ?
Go to the store and buy some peppermint or wintergreen oilThe pharmacist may have it behind the counter, so ask But several drops on an clean, damp cloth and put in the dryerSet the dryer on normal heat for about 20-30 minutes(Do not saturate the cloth; it will just make an awful messThe oils are volatile, too, so you don't want to use a lotJust several drops on a cloth.) You might open up the dryer vent and place a few drops inside the vent or put it in a small dish (make one from a piece of aluminum foil) and sit it in there, depending on the arrangement of the ventI had a mouse die in the furnace vent and the entire house smelledWe put little dishes of wintergreen oil in the floor registers and the smell was gone in a few daysKeep in mind that wintergreen oil and peppermint oil are VERY concentrated and VERY strongDo not get it on your skinKeep it away from kids and petsCats are drawn to it and it can kill them because it is so overpoweringOnce you use the oil, seal it tightly and put it up high in a cupboard where no one can get to it.
