- I wish it was that easy! Maybe it will be soon. But at this time, no, there isn't. And if you have a solar collection system, you have to have a way to store the energy when you're producing more than what you are currently using. That usually involves an expensive battery array. But it's necessary. The power coming directly from the solar panels will be erratic and sending it to the battery array for storage and then use allows for the home to draw a consistent level of power. And this battery system also allows for storage of electricity for use when the sun isn't shining like at night. The system should be set up to use your power first, then go to the grid. It should also allow for distribution to the grid when your system has stored all the power it can and that's when your meter will run backwards and the power company will be paying you! There are a lot of federal and state income tax rebates for alternative energy installation costs. Check out what Oregon might toss into the package along with the Feds and see where you might come out.

- Q:My electric bill per month averages 800 kWh per month. I am looking at 65W solar panels. How many panels would I need to make my bill come to zero? I realize I also need an inverter to convert dc to ac.
- There are 720 hours in a month (30 days) but only about /2 of those are in *full* sun 800 kW hr / 360 hr = 5 kW. 5000 W / 65 W / panel = 30 panels minimum and that's based on full sun during the day (no clouds, rain, etc). Besides an inverter you'll also want a bank of batteries to operate at night. OR, you can get about 35 - 40 panels and sell power back to the utility during the day (meter runs backwards), and use power off the grid at night. Suprise! solar power isn't cheap, is it? Figure on taking advantage of some government and public utility rebates, though to lessen the cost. .

- Actually there was talk about doing some major solar installations in New Mexico and Nevada. Unfortunately our government put a temporary hold on all large scale solar installations because they feel that they might hurt the local wildlife and more studies need to be done. So, now the huge installations have been put in line and have to go through a bunch of bureaucratic nonsense. Also, just so you know, large solar installations dont generally use photovoltaics. they use concentrating mirrors and concentrate the sun on a pipe with some sort of liquid in it which boils and runs turbines.
- Q:Here's a little idea I though might help everyone out in Iraq a little: How about if the US mass produces solar panels that are small enough to carry (maybe one foot by three feet) that have a regular power outlet on them to the Iraqis? We could send convoys to the people waiting in line to buy gas and give each person one free solar panel. Why?. A lot of people are buying gas to run generators for air conditioning, not to fuel vehicles. 2. It would help reduce the gas lines if people only needed gas for cars instead of their generators too.3. It would help reduce the fighting over the power grid if people didn't need the grid for their own electrical power.My theory is, once every family in Iraq has enough of these panels that they don't even care about the power grid (during the daytime anyway) it would be much easier to fix the power grid. Maybe these solar panels could even connect to and add to the power grid.
- I will answer your question with a question. Why does everyone try so hard to point out why they think (I did say think and they are normally wrong) something will not work. I agree with your idea but you are wanting to put the help or money in the wrong place. If we would just take care of our own here at home. We would not need their oil so they would have more for their own use. This would aswell stop our money from leaving our country and they would NOT beable to use our money to build bombs to kill us with. So just by taking care of ourselfs we would be helping Iraq and our own country. We would not need their oil and they would get what they want. Us out of their country. However, That will not help bush and his OIL millionaire friends so it will never happen.
