- Q:I know copper pots are supposed to be really good for cooking with, and I have been looking around online. One thing I don't want to do, however, is send them in to be re-lined with tin. So I was wondering if stainless steel lined copper pots work as well as the traditional tin lined ones, or if those make the copper just for looks.
- Stainless is a fairly poor conductor but that is not why it has hot spots. That's because they tend to be thin. Cast Iron is also a poor conductor and has about the most even heat distribution. Many Copper bottom pots are just Copper plated for looks. In fact only the most expensive will have the heavy Copper bottom needed for even heat. Tin is a metal, an element. Stainless Steel is a mixture ( alloy ) of Iron and Chromium or Nickel or both. I do not know of any cookware that is Tin plated on the inside. I like Aluminium clad Stainless Steel. Good heavy bottom for even heat and Al. is a good conductor. A little more expensive are three layer bottoms. They have the Al. between Stainless so you get the looks and easy cleaning os SS with the heat distribution of Al.
- Q:I remember my dad saying something about steel toed boots but I forgot =#92; I went and checked out all the stores and got a pair with good ankle support but they also have steel toes. Would this interfere with the shifter or anything? I figure if anything my dirt bike shoes have the steel toes too. Any opinion?

- The basic ingredient is from 11%-30% chromium, however in many stainless steels nickel or manganese are important secondary ingredients. There are two basic types of stainless steels: 1)austenitic stainless steels, and 2)ferritic stainless steels. In austenitic SS the important ingredients are Chromium and Nickel. (Chromium and manganese are occasionally use instead of nickel.) It's important to note that many austenitic SS's contain almost no carbon, so by some definitions they are not steel at all but iron/chromium/nickel alloys. the additions of nickel (or manganese) actually changes the crystal structure of the iron, so the properties of these types are quite different from normal carbon steels. Austenitic SS have very good to excellent corrosion resistance, and fairly good heat resistance. In ferritic stainless steels, the important ingredients are chromium and carbon. Ferritic stainless steels have markedly greater strength than austentitic types. However since they contain less chromium than austenitic types they are only moderately corrosion resistant and are much less heat resistant. Without the addition of nickel and/or manganeese adding more than about 20% chromium tends to make the steel brittle. Most stainless steel is melted under an inert argon atmosphere in an airtight furnace. Melting stainless in open air would preferentially oxidize the chromium, forming slag which would float to the surface of the steel, thus reducing the chromium content. Chromium also tends to react with nitrogen in the air at high temperatures, exposure to nitrogen tends to cause brittleness in stainless steels. As long as the manufacturer keeps careful control of the composition of the metal and the level of impurities during melting, stainless is endlessly recyclable.

- The composition you mention is not a low carbon steel.The carbon and manganese content are high enough to mean that the crystal grain size will be small. A very large grain size is needed in steels for transformers,motors etc.The large grain size and lack of carbides in low silicon steels for magnetic purposes allows the easy movement of magnetic domain walls.Transformer steels typically have a carbon content of about 0.003% and 3.5%Si with the phosphorus and sulphur at a tenth of the levels you mention.The high Si content increases the electrical resistivity of the magnetic core and reduces the power loss from eddy currents(the core metal has voltages generated in it by the changing magnetic fields) and the power lost in eddy currents heats up a transformers core so it needs extra cooling;the loss is inversely proportional to the resistivity and 3.5%Si increases resistivity of iron by a very large amount.The presence of high silicon with ultra low carbon and manganese level allows the soft magnetic steels to be annealed at very high temperatures(850 to 1100deg C)without a phase change so that the crystals have 10,000 to 10,000,000 times the volume of the crystals in heat-treatable (Just)steel you mention.Fine for playing with and demonstrating electromagnetism but not as electrical engineering feedstuff.
