- Q:My husband and I recently bought a house and I am in the process of painting and decorating. The previous owners left their sofa and love seat. The sofa is brown and the material is almost suede-like. I really like the sofa, but the love seat is HIDEOUS. It has a horrible pattern of pinks and greens, and it is torn in some places. I would just toss it, but it is super comfortable. Instead, I am going to buy a slipcover for it. My question is, should I get a matching brown cover, or would a light beige one look okay with it. It is a smallish living room with old hardwood floors that doesn't get a ton of light. Eventually I want to paint it a pale blue with white trim. So what do you think? Would the beige be better to avoid bringing more dark colors into the room or would they look weird together? Thanks in advance!

- I would go with leather- it is much better than fabric but maybe a lighter color tan instead of chocolate brown.

- I'd suggest you go to a local library and look in the antique section for patterns and detailings specific to the noveau period. To know what it is made out of would also be helpful, to see if the materials corresponded to the time period. Google for notable furniature makers of the period and see if the design of your sofa fits the typical design of a certain craftsperson. The best thing to do would be to ask a antiques dealer, historian or someone with that kind of knowledge. It doesn't have to be expensive, there is likely to be someone in your community with an active interest in that soft of thing.

- Q:I just gotta a new sofa bed today. And about 10 minutes ago I was trying to get it into my room. It just so happens that it won't go through my door way. Ok well it would fit through my doorway but it wont turn into my bedroom from the hallway because i have a small hallway.
- Some of the suggestions you already have are pretty good, especially the upright attempt. But measure carefully first, the only suggestion I can add is to remove the legs. I do upholstery, the legs should be attached to the frame with screws, so check and see, then carefully remove (make sure you put all the screws into a baggie or other container so they don't disappear. Removing the legs should make the profile of the sofa narrower, so if you can slip it in upright, that will give you a few less inches in width, then when its in the room, all you have to do is re-attach the legs. Hope this helps.

- Cream sofa would call for chocolate accessorization, I think this would just bring it down be very pedestrian. You could also do navy or peach for accents with the cream sofa if you want an overall lighter look. So...after all this analyzation, I vote for the midnight blue...I think it would be easier to complete the picture with the midnight for someone who has difficulty with color. I hope I gave you some guidance for the project.
