Aluminium foil acts as a total barrier to light and oxygen (which cause fats to oxidise or become rancid), odours and flavours, moistness, and germs, it is used broadly in food and pharmaceutical packaging. The purpose of aluminium is to make long-life packs (aseptic processing|aseptic packaging) for drinks and dairy goods, which allows storing without refrigeration. Aluminium foil containers and trays are used to bake pies and to pack takeaway meals, ready snacks and long life pet foods.

Aluminium foil is widely sold into the consumer market, often in rolls of 500 mm (20 in) width and several metres in length. It is used for wrapping food in order to preserve it, for example, when storing leftover food in a refrigerator (where it serves the additional purpose of preventing odour exchange), when taking sandwiches on a journey, or when selling some kinds of take-away or fast food. Tex-Mex restaurants in the United States, for example, typically provide take-away burritos wrapped in aluminium foil.

  • Aluminium foils thicker than 25 µm (1 mil) are impermeable to oxygen and water. Foils thinner than this become slightly permeable due to minute pinholes caused by the production process.

  • Aluminium foil has a shiny side and a matte side. The shiny side is produced when the aluminium is rolled during the final pass. It is difficult to produce rollers with a gap fine enough to cope with the foil gauge, therefore, for the final pass, two sheets are rolled at the same time, doubling the thickness of the gauge at entry to the rollers. When the sheets are later separated, the inside surface is dull, and the outside surface is shiny. This difference in the finish has led to the perception that favouring a side has an effect when cooking. While many believe that the different properties keep heat out when wrapped with the shiny finish facing out, and keep heat in with the shiny finish facing inwards, the actual difference is imperceptible without instrumentation. The reflectivity of bright aluminium foil is 88% while dull embossed foil is about 80%

Q:What gorceries can you name that have been hit with the shrink ray?
Depends on the brandPersonally I like the Magpul PMAG and EMAGI would say that they are both extremely reliable and better than the standard GI aluminium magazineJust looking at some videos of it, people run over magpul brands and they tend to work even after a lot of abuseI know the military issues pmags and I know at least the British infantry issues emags for their troops to use in their weaponEven with steel/aluminium mags, they tend to contain plastic followers on themSo no matter what you get some plastic in your gunAs far as other plastic brands, I'm not so sureI heard various things about themI only buy Magpul PMAG/EMAGs and the NHMTG aluminium magsI haven't had any issues with either of them and I find the Magpul brands to be somewhat better in the long runIn general, the classification is difficult in the magazine worldGenerally speaking NHMTG, Magpul, Colt, and DH are considered top quality magazinesOther than that there are mixed resultsThe problem with other polymer mags tend to be that they don't have good followers on them or they melt / deform under extreme temps such as putting them into a hot gunA magpul won't do thatEdit: MSAR is considered somewhat okay but most people would agree that for the price you can get one, just buying a quality Magpul one is far betterMost people buy MSAR just for trying out a new product or getting a range magOtherwise, when it's go time, Magpul brands would be what they wantAs I said above (and Mr 357 below said), other plastic brands tend to handle heat differently even though they are made of the same materialJust because Magpul is made of polymer it doesn't mean it's the same thing that is in an MSAR or other brand.
Q:How can I distinguish foil paper from silver jam? Where are the differences, if they are identified by the naked eye, or by simple experiments?.
Aluminum foil refers to the combination of aluminum foil and paper, which means aluminum foil and paper can be separatedI don't know if you mean the aluminized paper.
Q:Hi, I would like to know how I make my own coin dies for tokens.I have tried using aluminium and hammering nails in to make the basic shape, but it's just dots :(Thanks
Making detailed dies for tokens is going to be hard-the way the pros do it is to create a large plaster model, and use what's called a pantograph to reduce it to the dieObviously, that's probably beyond what you want to do at this pointOne other problem is that the die needs to be harder than the material you're strikingIf you're planning on doing these tokens in metal, it's going to be tough to find something softer than aluminumYou could try getting the dots as close together as you can, and then hold the nail at a shallow angle to carve out the metal between the dotsIf you've ever seen anybody do woodworking with a chisel, that's the effect I'm talking aboutIf you've got $30 or so to spare, you might want to buy a metal engraving tool, which I think would work a lot betterJust make sure to wear safety glasses.
Q:A few weeks ago I was at a seafood place and I got salmonI loved it but I want some ideas on how to cook itI just put it in a pan and fry it but I'd like to try it other ways too.
Q:In Gustav the back window of my car blew out and I got some water in my carIs there anything I can spray to prevent mold growth or kill what may have already grown without damaging the seats or anything?
James, I've just tried someone else suggestion concerning mold and mildew in a car interiorBuy several cheap shallow aluminum foil cooking pans and 10 - $1.00 boxes of backing soda from WalmartFill each foil pan half full with baking sodaI placed 3 small ones on the dash, 3 on the top of the rear deck lid, removed the rear seat back and seat, one large one in each footwell and two large ones where the rear seat was before I removed it If the interior has fully dried roll the windows up and let the baking soda consume the mold and mildew for 1 -2 weeksI've had the baking soda in our winter-beater for 5 days and the rotten moldy stench is gone!
Q:I am curious why everyone seems to think FPS is such a big dealI run a customized gun that runs pretty hot (420 with .2s, I use .25s or .28s only) but I wish I had downgraded to the low 300s rather than put it into the low 400sOnce you can hit your target, and assuming you aren't a dedicated sniper (LONG range, never less than 100 feet) why is FPS important?
Dairy, anything greasy.
