There is no real way to answer that question. Laptops last anywhere from a couple of days (hardware failure) or more than ten years if everything goes OK. It's like a PC. As long as nothing major goes wrong you can use a computer for a long time (as long as windows can be put on it).

Depending on what you want, there are some good options. For basic computing, an older Windows PC with Windows 2000, or Windows XP would do it. Or you could get an iBook G3 or G4. For what most people consider Modern Computing you should go with what your budget allows, HP, Dell, and Sony are good brands for PC laptops, and as the one guy said, avoid Acer, and IBM. If you care to spend the money, get a Mac, they work great, have great customer service, long lives, and they can even run Windows XP, Vista, MS Office, and many other things. The debate about which OS to pick is pointless though, they are both great.

All installed programs on your computer will slow it down a bit. Lets say there are 2 laptops with equal specs and the same number of processes running on idle. Laptop A has 100 (safe) programs installed while Laptop B has only 15. Laptop B will run faster than Laptop A. Maplestory is a completely safe game and will not have much effect on your laptops performance

Maybe you should get a netbook for that price. They're pretty small but extremely portable. They're good for typing too. YOu need to be more specific in order for me to truly help you. Good luck!
