Q:I drive a 2003 Mitsubishi Outlander and I am required to change my timing belt as part of preventive maintenance. When I had been to Firestone, they quoted $998 for Timing Belt Water Pump (both parts labor). When I called Midas, they quoted $550 for the same. Does anyone know why there is such a big difference? I have been a regular at Firestone, so Midas is new to me. Are they reliable? Midas is quoting low now, but would there be a surprise charge after I get it done? BTW, how is a water pump related to a timing belt??

Some cars have different designs. The water pump on my 96 Century could have been done in a matter of minutes. Where as some are much deeper in the engine. Usually, to change a water pump like this is pretty much one more step than changing the timing belt. This is why it's usually a good idea to do them both at once.

Pull it out of the car and look at it. But since your water pump is most likely driven by the timing belt, that's a hell of a job. My guess is you probably need your timing belt replaced anyways though.

Q:About 2 months ago I started hearing a noise coming from my bathroom that sounded like loud humming every 3 or 4 seconds after I would turn on the water or flush the toilet. I noticed that when this noise happened the water pressure would increase and then it would go back to normal. Then the noise started to get louder. Last night while my husband was taking a shower the water lost pressure and then completely turned off. Now I have no water at all whatsoever except for maybe a few drops when I turn the faucet on. I have a private well and when I bought the house I was told that the well is underneath one of my bedrooms because the house was built on to and they built over the well. I know I can get to the pump from the crawl space. Has anyone had this problem or does anyone know what it might be or maybe even how much it could cost to fix?

Do you have a pressure tank? if so you might need a new pressure tank. My well had a similar problem which required me to replace both the pump and pressure tank. check your tank first if you have one if not you will have to replace the pump unfortunately you are in a predicament on location of the pump this pump should be removed vertically and with a crawl space this will prove to be difficult. I hope this helps good luck on the situation. If doing yourself please note this is a 2-3 man job on pump replacement. Pumps generally run between 100-300$ make sure the pump you purchase meets ampage requirements of the existing pump.

Q:I have oil all over my water pump. I investigated when I saw a few drops of oil in the garage that showed up every few days. I then saw a drop of clean radiator fluid. Does oil come near or through the water pump? I have a 96 nissan maxima if that helps.

get the cylinders checked for pressure. Check the spark plugs for fouling and oil in the radiator. It sounds like you cracked a block.

your question is not clear, do you need to build the pump from scratch or you should find one? what is the water flow rate? how high the water need to go? what the helmet has to do with the problem? simplest solution will be to go to the store and buy small hand pump (for fuel).
