Technically, running your RCA wires and power wires shouldn't cause any problems and can be dubbed a myth. However, a lot of people will disagree. For induction between power and signal wire to occur, a form of AC must be introduced on the DC power wire. One solution, if you want to run them together, is to have good shielded RCA cables and/or to separate the RCA wires and twist them (as in twisted pair wire, twisted pair wire is used in CAT3, CAT5 and CAT6 communication wire to eliminate noise/interference/induction). Another solution is distance, you don't have to have cable on both sides of the car as a 1 foot separation will do just as good. ____________ As for will s, What in the world would anyone use a zener diode for? A zener diode is used to regulate a lower voltage from a higher voltage. Example, if I wanted a pure 6 volts from a 12 volt supply then I would use a zener. Zeners don't operate well when the supply is the same as what you want out (ie, 12 volt supply, 12 volts out). Besides to find one to handle the current will both be quite large and expensive. Plain useless. Additional notes Clearly your attempts are for a good measure, but lack in the knowledge of what really happens with the introduction of induction on an input, makes your idea wrong. I would like to point out that overvoltage transients and induction are two totally different things in their respective terms. Overvoltage transients are caused by motors and relays turning on/off. Induction occurs exactly what happens in an AC transformer. But in this case, AC isn't an issue since it's a DC power source. Granted, induction is probable, but not likely due to the insignifacant level of voltage produced plus the sheilding of the RCA cables.

any cable with an electrical current passing through will create an electromagnetic field. however when you bundle them in a single loop, because the currents are going in the same direction they will resemble a very big cable with a lot of current, so the magnetic field will be much larger (this is in part how an electric motor works). the best way to avoid this would be to remove excess cable so there would be no need to have loops. Really i'm not convinced about the benefits of having the cable in a figure 8 pattern, because it's just like having two loops really. i would try to avoid loops, or at least keep them away from the actual hifi and the speakers. generally components in your hifi and speakers will be magnetically shielded, to prevent any interference like that, however if you hear a buzzing noise when your mobile phone is near, than it's possible they're not shielded, as your mobile phone is a source of electromagnetic interference. if you're worried about electromagnetic interference it is also worth noting that wifi routers, mobile and cordless phones and microwaves are all sources of electromagnetic radiation. hope that all helps

It will work if the wires are undamaged. But they will have been kinked when the cable got chewed. The cable is now dangerous, if the wires are pinched you may get a hot spot, melt the insulation and fire/shock hazard. Turn it off and replace the cable.

You have three questions, let's see if I can get you three satisfying answers. Does it need a pre-amp? That's kind of like asking, does my dvd player need surround sound? In short, yes. But really, no. A good preamp will make your sound much better if used effectively. Can I use a Fender Strat guitar with the amp instead of a bass? Yes. Playing a guitar through a bass amp is done from time to time. There are pros and cons. The big pro is the low end and the volume. The big con is that you lose your high end pretty much entirely. So, you will sound pretty muddy and gross. But, you can do it and it shouldn't blow up at low/moderate volume levels. Are there things I should know before using this amp? Have fun, learn to play, when you know you will play for a long time - upgrade to tube.

You will most likely be fine, but check the power rating. If you look at the back of the PC, just below the power cable install you will see a rating for voltage. The cable should match that voltage. I cannot imagine that any power cable for a PC would be higher or lower than the standard, at least if you are in the US.
