Q:My mom and I are growing some summer squash in our garden. All of the squash up untill this point have rotted and then eventually develop this white (yeast like) fuzz on them with black tips. Now we have three very nice and harvestable sized squash on the plant now. Are these healthy looking ones safe to eat?I'm worried my plant has some disease and I know nothing about gardening as this is my first year with a garden. I'm sure as long as they don't show any signs of rotting, odd coloration, mushiness etc they are fine to eat but you never know. Thanks for any help
The healthy-looking squash are safe to eat. Probably what was happening was the earlier squash blossoms weren't getting pollinated, so the little squash embryos rotted and fell from the plant. Female blossoms produce the squash, and a female blossom has a tiny squash embryo directly behind the blossom. A male blossom is just on a stem. If there are no male flowers on the plant, or their pollen isn't reaching the females, the little squash embryos cannot develop and mature, and they end up shriveling, rotting and falling from the plant. No big deal, you can pollinate the female blossoms yourself so long as there are some male blossoms also. Go out to the garden in the morning, while the pollen is still fresh. Find a male blossom and rub some of its pollen onto a Q-Tip or small paintbrush. Then transfer the pollen to a female blossom. This will pollinate the female blossom and its little squash will mature and be edible.

Q:For home gardening, it would seem that it is a matter of how pure one wants to be. However, including in a compost pile vegetable or fruit skins containing insect spray would definitely cause serious contamination. For commercial farms, does organic certification require that all compost or other so-called organic fertilizers and purchased soil, mulch, etc.,, be screened for chemical content? For home gardening, how can one be sure about the content of purchased soil, mulch, etc.?
for 'home' gardening.... DONT PURCHASE any soil, mulch etc.... make your own, then you'll KNOW what went into it.... as for commercial produce and what it contains.... don't be silly.... of course there's something in it or on it.... so don't use it.... commercial FARMS?....if they SELL produce labeled 'organic' they do not purchase anything for their gardens that is not already labeled organic.... it's the LAW.... now, as for organic gardening.....??.... don't let me get started.... you want organic?... take your self and go out into the middle of a old abandoned farmstead in Kansas , for example... plow over an acre there.... plant 'organic' seeds.... there ya go... one organic garden..... what you get FROM it is up to the rain gods and the bugs.... past that, you're doing something to it and it's no longer 'organic'..... that is one word that is so over-used and that has so many possible 'meanings' that it's useless in normal conversation..... I'd like to see it abolished.... either folks try so hard to attain it and can't get food from the garden or folks get all snobby and won't eat anything that wasn't raised that way and pay dearly for it (so how is it that they don't spend more money to buy pesticides and fertilizers to put on these plants, thus saving a BUNCH of money, but the produce costs so much MORE than the usual stuff???)....... and it's just all gonna turn to poop anyways!!!... I agree that chemical pesticides can harm both us and the environment!!... DDT showed us how we'd gone 'too far' with killing bugs.... nowadays, the smart folks use a little pyrethrin in emergency situations *from flowers...or some Neem *from a tree or soap..... and still, someone will claim these things are not 'organic'..... I'd like a twenty minute session inside a locked room with them!!.... how pure?.... wash the stuff before you eat it and you're doing the best thing you can!!!.....
Q:Some A$$H0LE applied pesticides to my entire home garden, and left a pesticides application sign. I want to know if the vegetables I grew are still safe to eat after I clean it.
Actually if what you mean by cleaning is soaping and rinsing it, PERHAPS it may be safe to eat it. But precaution is safer by delaying harvesting your vegetables. Most pesticides usually loss effects after a week. After this period, you can harvest your veggies for consumption. Be sure to wash it very well before using.

Q:Are there any specific books out there, that can help me with timing my garden? So I know when I should plant certain seeds and bulbs to bloom at a certain time (for example, early spring), and then perfectly overlap with other seeds and bulbs that open in the following periods (mid to late spring, summer, etc)I am asking specifically in regards to what seeds are best planted over spring bulbs like tulips, etc. Thanks
There is a link to a book in my source section below. But what you are looking for is succession gardening, so do a web search on that term in quotes. The second link is to a garden plan description on the Better Homes Gardens web site. You will have to register to see the actual plan but they do not spam you.
Q:I was thinking about these: mulberry, apple, peach, cherry, or plum.Any suggestions? Also be specific don't just say apple please say what type.Thank you in advance :D
Your question leaves a lot to be desired. Your choice of trees will depend upon why you want to grow a tree in your garden. I'm looking at doing the same thing, but my reasons will dictate what type of tree. I'm looking for something that will provide shade, grow at a medium pace, and not establish too many roots, especially roots that will grow close to the surface of the soil. I want to continue to grow vegetables, but I have limited space, with paved walkways, so I want to make sure the roots don't up heave the walkway. Fruit trees would be nice, but they can be messy with the leaf drop, etc. I don't want a tree that grows into a large tree, but one that primarily provides shade (since I live in SC). I'm trying to provide some shade to my vegetables, because the heat is sometimes too much for my plants. I've decided to go with a crepe myrtle, because it will provide color, and isn't too difficult to maintain. I would suggest you further evaluate your sistuation before deciding what type of tree is best for you. good luck
Q:Is it slob-ish to hang out barefoot in your own home / garden?
“Going barefoot is the gentlest way of walking and can symbolize a way of living-being authentic, vulnerable, sensitive to our surroundings. It’s the feeling of enjoying warm sand beneath out toes, or carefully making our way over sharp rocks in the darkness. It’s a way of living that has the lightest impact, removing the barrier between us and nature.” From the book “Barefoot Dreaming” by Adele Coombs Why render our feet deaf and blind if we don’t need to? Imagine having to wear gloves or ear plugs every time you left the house. Think of all the wonderful sensory input you would miss. Now imagine expanding avenues of sensory input. Imagine being able to feel the wide variety of interesting textures and pleasant surfaces beneath your own two feet as you go about your daily business. You can. In general, being barefoot promotes healthy development of musculature in the feet and legs, while excessive reliance on shoes tends to promote atrophy and weakness in those same muscles. This suggests that overdependency on shoes can have serious consequences. A study published in the September 2006 issue of Arthritis and Rheumatism found that “modern shoes may exacerbate the abnormal mechanics of lower-extremity osteoarthritis.” Researchers concluded that maybe it was time to re-evaluate our daily walking programs, presumably to include time for walking barefoot. Anyone who prefers to take a pass on shoes for reasons of health or comfort should be able to choose to go barefoot, free from arbitrary assumptions based on false or misleading information being used to justify exclusionary attitudes and policies.
Q:what do i need and how do i start one?
first you need a butterfly, then you need a garden....plant the butterfly in the garden, water generously then wait till spring!!!!
