Q:What's a good book to learn the basics of gardening? I have never done any gardening before.?
Gardening 1-2-3 by Home Depot. You can go to Home Depot and buy it. Or you can go to Books A Million, they have sale books section. Some gardening books by Ortho are 50% off.
Q:I'm a naturist, I stay naked in my home, defecate in my garden and eat local animals... Why the complaints?
We live in a society where nakedness is frowned upon. Defecation in the garden is quite unhygienic. So of course people are gonna complain.
Q:garlic, onions Any gardeners out there know any tips on vertickle sm gardening ideas?
We don't know where you live, so it's hard to make a recommendation. As for GMO - you can't get GMO's to plant in your home garden even if you WANTED to. They don't exist for the home gardener. (You'd have to sign a contract to do it) So no worries. If you are in late summer, and your first frost is at least 2 months way, you can plant lettuce, spinach, carrots, onions, and if you can find starts - cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower. Wait to plant garlic until it's time to plant your spring bulbs (like tulips, daffodils, crocus) in the fall. Then harvest the garlic next summer.
Q:Where can I buy cottonseed meal in Los Angeles?
Home garden stores should carry it. Also health food stores.
Q:Instruction Manual for Better Homes and Gardens Abbey Oak Desk?
I am not sure if it is for a desk made by Ameriwood, or if it is a Wal-Mart number. The rep said you can get the instructions by email if you call. If you go to the Wal-Mart site, they have a link for consumer questions and answers. Apparently it is not that uncommon for them to omit desk assembly instructions from the boxes. Additional Details: I'm sorry you had so many problems! I do like the Sauder products more, I think.
Q:Is well water good for watering garden plants,flowers..etc?
without a doubt it’s fantastic value. Ideas4Landscaping have detailed diagrams and simple to follow directions if you don’t know where to commence, a system that is also coming with numerous themes and bonus supplies like the “Landscaping Secrets Revealed guide, Save On Energy Costs – Green Home guidebook or How To Grow Organic Vegetables - without a doubt a complete plan for the ones that want to learn landscaping or just to make the backyard or front yard more fascinating.
Q:Which direction should buddha statue face in home or garden?
Not sure but probably the West as that's the direction of some cool paradise. You could also place it anywhere where you can look at it and feel blessed with the Buddha's infinite grace and wisdom. There is no direction that the Buddha's statue cannot bring light and peace to :)
Q:Does any one have a the 1946 deluxe edition of the Better Homes and Gardens cook book?
I have a Better Homes and Gardens cookbook dated 1946. It does not say it is the deluxe edition however. My cookbook has chapters and each of those chapters has the pages numbered starting with 1. The chapters are letters of the alphabet. I need a chapter letter plus page number. If you could tell me what the recipe is for which you are looking for, I am quite sure my cook book will have it.
Q:Urban Gardening: How do you Prepare your Soil in the Suburb?
I have the same sort of concerns about eating vegetables grown in the back yard. In addition to the toxins that you mentioned, there is the possibility of additional contamination from deteriorating sewer lines and whatever is washed off the roads during a rainstorm. You can have the soil tested at an environmental testing laboratory, but you will have to tell them what you are testing for. If your are testing for chemicals, they may ask you for the CAS numbers. I figure that things grown above the ground are safer -- eg. fruit from trees, grapes from grapevines, bramble berries, etc. Also, it would be safer if you used raised bed gardening. You could do this by piling up dirt into small hills for planting. Start a compost bin for your vegetable scraps, leaves, grass, and brown matter like cardboard in order to make compost to add to your garden . This also helps the soil. I once called the agriculture department in my state to ask about the kind of concerns you have about a home garden, but I didn't get a responsive answer.
