Q:What are the best choices for a home garden?
Lettuces and spinach take little space and are easy to grow during the spring and fall. Carrots and radishes can be planted pretty densely and radishes only take a month from seed to harvest so several crops can be planted in a season. I would often eat them right out the garden. A couple of tomatoes are a must. They are more vertical space. At least a cherry (for eating in the garden) and a beefsteak for slicing. Buy or make big sturdy cages Sugar snap peas are a favorite. Build a trellis for them to climb and they take little space. Same goes for vine cucumbers. Peppers and eggplants are pretty compact but I gave up on them after the flea beetles arrived. Zucchini and yellow squash are big plants but you can get a big yield from one mound of plants. Hope that helps. -Brian
Q:does anyone have the old Better homes and gardens Coconut Cream Pie recipe?
White Chocolate and Coconut Cream Pie Source: Better Homes and Gardens Makes 8 servings Ingredients 2 cups coconut 1/2 cup crushed graham crackers 1/4 cup butter, melted 2 cups milk 6 egg yolks 3/4 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons creme de cacao 4 ounces white baking bar, chopped 2 cups whipping cream 1/2 cup sifted powdered sugar 1 tablespoon creme de cacao (optional) Toasted coconut or white baking bar curls (optional) 1. For crust, stir together 1 cup of the coconut, graham crackers, and melted butter. Press onto bottom and up sides of a 9-inch pie plate. Bake in a 350 degree F oven for 10 minutes. Cool on a wire rack. 2. For filling, in a large heavy saucepan heat milk and remaining coconut just to simmering, stirring occasionally. 3. Meanwhile, in a mixing bowl combine egg yolks, granulated sugar, and flour. Beat with an electric mixer on medium-high speed until combined. Gradually stir 1 cup of the hot milk mixture into the egg yolk mixture. Return all of the yolk mixture to the saucepan. Cook and stir until mixture comes to boiling. Cook and stir for 2 minutes more. Remove saucepan from heat. Stir in 1 tablespoon of the butter and the 2 tablespoons creme de cacao. Cover surface with clear plastic wrap; cool. 4. Meanwhile, in a small saucepan melt white baking bar with remaining 1 tablespoon butter over low heat, stirring constantly. Spread onto bottom and sides of cooled crust. Cool until white baking bar is firm. Pour filling into crust. Cover and chill pie for 2 to 4 hours. 5. Thirty minutes before serving, in a chilled mixing bowl beat whipping cream, powdered sugar, and, if desired, the 1 tablespoon creme de cacao until stiff peaks form (tips stand straight). Swirl whipped cream over pie. Cover and chill for 30 minutes. If desired, garnish with coconut or white baking bar curls. Makes 8 servings.
Q:how can i get rid of black algae in garden pond?
Wish I knew how big of a pond it is that you have. The pond that I made is 5 foot long by 3 feet wide and 3 feet deep. Here is what I did,now bare in mind I only had algae on the sides. I wiped down the entire sides of the pond, did a water change. But then my pond was cloudy. I waited 2 days and went and got a small bottle of clear all(sold in aquarium stores, cost $2). 3 days of adding this and I have not had a problem since. Crystal clear and can see everything in the pond. And this is with a pond that is wide open to the sun, getting 12 plus hours of sunlight daily.Plus my pond has a sponge filter and a power head to circulate the water. We just went through 1 of the hottest July's on record with temps in the low to mid 90's just about every day. There is also barley straw that can be used and is sold at pond centers. But I heard it takes about a month before seeing any results. Hope this helps
