Q:We just bought a ranch style home in florida, it has a tan tile, more like shingle roof. I want to update the look, it is an old house, the colors it has now gray with black trim all over make the house look depressing and dingy. I haven't seen too many ranch style homes with a tan roof, so I'm just wondering what colors would go best? It also has a stucco surface, and there is a black iron fence with red brick that goes all around the house. It's out in a country like area, so I want to stay true to it's roots.

Q:I have a small home garden. I planted some purple passion spinach. Its growing beautifully, and I have three plants. The problem is there are these little green caterpillars that are eating it all! I noticed it on a fee leaves a while ago but didn't mind a leaf here or there. But they are eating it all now. Today, I harvested leaves from the plants and I had to throw hlalf of them away!!! I picked all of the big leaves and removed all of the caterpillars (its growing in a container) and killed them, some I threw away with the leaves. What do I do? I really don't want to put a pesticide on my food. Is there an organic or home remedy I can use?? Also, they are not eating any of my other plants.

Okay you can use this. But you may not believe me but here it is. You need to use tobacco soak it in water and then spray it on the leafs. it should help.

The best time to start any garden is in the spring or early summer, after the last frost. What you can do now is start planning. Figure out what you want to grow in the garden (type and number of plants), and how much space you will need for what you want. You should keep your annuals (like basil) in a separate bed from the perennials, so you won't disturb the roots of your perennials when you pull out the dead annuals. The folks at your local garden center should be able to help you pick out which herbs would do best in your area. In the spring, you can either start seed in small pots and then plant them out (which is more work but you get a lot of plants out of one seed packet) or you can buy started plants in small pots at the garden center. This is faster but more expensive, and you may not be able to find all the plants you want available as starts. Good luck!

Q:We are building a new home and are acting as our own contractors. We are having cabinets, granite, wood floors and tile brought in from other stores but need faucets, sinks, toilets ect.. Home Depot used to do a 10% discount card but neither them nor Lowes does this anymore. Anybody have any ideas as far as where to go to get alot of things where they might give a dicount? How is Home Deot and Lowes quality?

I would call a plumbing supplier. Tell them you want to buy all of your fixtures and ask if they will give you a discount on buying everything for your house from them. Also, quality of fixtures is not found in the store but in the brand. Koeler is your top of the line stuff, but it is expensive! Moen is standard for faucets and has a life time guarantee. Peerless is also a good name for faucets and American Standard is a good name for your ceramic fixtures.
