Q:I am new to saltwater tank, and i what to add a sump to my tank, but I don't know what to add to it. what water pump? do i add the filter to the sump or does the filter stay in the tank.

you do no longer use siphons to flow water to the sump, you employ an overflow and pipes. the point of having the overflow in a tank with a sump is that the pass between the two tanks would be even. while the water is pumped returned to the tank and reaches a definite point that water will then pass returned to the sump. If the capability will fail then the pump will end working, so no water would be moved returned into the tank, no water will overflow returned. the priority with 2 pumps would be that no 2 pumps are comparable. One pump is 2 hundred gallons consistent with hour, the different is 199, next one is 195 regardless of being from an identical authentic line and type. So in case you have a 2 hundred and 199 GPH you will finally end up with the two the tank or the sump spilling after some hours.

Q:I just bought a 1997 Honda Civic, done about 85k. There is no record of the timing belt having ever been changed so I want to get this done as a priority. My usual mechanic can't do it for a month due to other commitments so I have been ringing round for quotes, and generally these have all been to change the belt quot;plus the kit- which makes sense, change the lot while you are in there.Surprisingly, the cheapest quote I have had was from my local Honda dealer, however, they have said this is for the belt only as they don't change the tensioner/water pump on this model. Are they full of it? I'm not sure whether to take this as expertise from the car's manufacturer or total BS from some chancer trying to make money from us having to come back when other things go wrong!

This is a hot topic even among Honda enthusiasts and professionals. The whole deal about changing the water pump, as you probably know, is that the labor to do that is small once the timing belt is out of the way. However - and this is the big issue - most original Honda water pumps last a very long time, even more than 200K miles. Do you feel lucky? One big issue enters here: what sort of antifreeze has been used in it? If it still has Honda antifreeze (dark green in your 1997, as I recall) the pump is probably still good for another 100K miles even if the coolant has not been changed on schedule. If it has conventional (bright) green or some other coolant that is not known to be silicate free I strongly recommend replacing the pump with an OEM pump. See the first source for the reason. In any case, I recommend replacing the water pump with the next timing belt change if you don't do it this time. 300K miles is a lot to ask of a pump seal. I also strongly recommend not going with an aftermarket pump - OEM only. I make a habit of always replacing the pump and tensioner(s). EDIT - Shane A has a good point. If the water pump fails next year the price of a new pump and tensioner will seem trivial. The pain of higher cost is temporary, the peace of mind is lasting.

Q:I think my water pump is going bad but figure id ask everyone to see what they thought. I leak coolant like the first 20 min i drive my truck and then it will seal itself up for the next day or two then start leaking again. It is getting leaked all over the belt and the fan is spraying it all around so you cant tell where exactly its coming from but i checked all the hoses and they are good and im pretty sure its not the radiator. Also, when it is leaking there is a loud whining noise when my trucks on and i heard that can be from the pump too.

Q:My water pump is starting to leak. The shops are quoting $250- $300 to replace but I can buy a water pump at the auto parts store and install myself for less than $100 but I don't know what all is involved with this repair or if I should try (my only experience with car repair up to now is recently replacing the alternator). If anyone has done this please let me know what you think. thanks

you can make it even easier by purchasing a hayne's manual for your car when you buy the water pump. you will need it anyway so you can have the proper torque specs and sequence when reinstalling the new water pump. so if you don't have a torque wrench you will need to rent one. the first step of course will be to drain your cooling system. then use masking tape and a sharpie to number any connectors or hoses you have to remove to access the water pump. once the old one is off make sure to clean every trace of gasket material from the mating flange. then when you are ready to reinstall put a thin coat (use you fingers to spread)of rtv silicone to each side of the new gasket this will help hold in place. then here's where you will need the book insert the bolts and tighten them in sequence shown to the proper torque unless you want to chance cracking the new pump housing. on a car this old if it has not already been done now would be a good time to replace hoses (esp. if they are soft) and your thermostat since you've already got the cooling system drained. once everything is reassembled start the engine and begin pouring in the new coolant, if there are any bleed screws open these it's very important to get all the air out of the system if there are no bleed screws you can leave the cap off the radiator or expansion tank (you'll need to anyway) since one you think its filled when the thermostat opens its all gonna drain down and you'll have to top it off again. here is a good time to pay attention as it approaches normal operating temp be ready to start pouring as soon as the level starts to drop that will help keep more air from getting in. any questions feel free to e-mail me

Q:I moved into a house on a rural property in January, and we live off tank water and have a Grunfos PT18 pumping all our water into the house.The problem is, not all the time, but alot of the time my pump stays on after having a shower, the motor keeps running and restarting continuously as if it is desperately trying to pump more water through, until I go underneath my house and literally turn it off at the powerpoint, wait for a bit then turn it back on. I am scared if I leave the motor keep going like that it will burn my pump out. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can fix this problem, or why it may be doing this, or is something causing it?Thankyou in advance, from someone who has next to no knowledge about pumps!!

Is there a pressure tank on the system? If so, there is little to no air in the tank or the tank bladder if equipped has a hole in it. Try this. Turn off the power to the pump. Look for an air valve at the top of the tank and open it, there should be a slight hiss. While it is open, also open a tap in the house and drain off about 3 gallons of water. Now close everything and restart the pump. It should now run normal. All pressure systems require air on top of the water to operate, otherwise pump is waterlogged.

Q:I just replaced my starter on my mustang and i when i took it out for a test drive i noticed the engine temperature rising. i drove for maybe 2 minutes max and when i parked the car it had a small amount of white smoke coming out of the engine so i let it cool down, and when it cooled down i checked the radiator, it had absolutely no anti-freeze, which is weird because i had just put a gallon of 50-50 anti-freeze maybe a week ago. So to test it i put 3 cups of water in the radiator turned her on and water was spilling from the water pump. So me and my dad have concluded we have to replace the water pump. I called up Autozone and they have a water pump replacement kit for $70. We don't have money too pay for the labor so can some1 please give me a step by step guide to replacing the water pump.

So did you get it changed? mine just broke. do you got any pointers?

Q:3 months ago I had to replace the water pump on my Jeep (for $600!!!). Now I have leaking again and they are telling me that I need a new radiator. I'm wondering how did they know I needed a water pump last time (it was leaking just like now) and not a new radiator like they're saying this time? I know nothing about anything, and I feel like I'm not informed enough to know what they're really doing. Is this common?

Could be both. The water pump may have been leaking. Did the leak stop after the work was done? If so then it was leaking. The radiator may just have lived out it's life. Corrosion will eventually cause these types of things. I don't know where you're located but $600 for a water pump is a rip off. Maybe you went to the dealer? If it's not under a warranty and you're not buying a new one the jeep does not belong at the dealership. I recently did my water pump on my 94. $100 including new hoses and about 45 minutes. So even parts mark up and $60 labor should have been about $210 or so. For the radiator they are about $150 again depending on where you are. See if you can get a 3 core. Q:I have a '97 Chevy S-10 2.2 with 208K miles. Today on the way to work the heat cut out suddenly.I have had an issue with my engine where the temp will go up and down while on the highway but maxes out at like 215. Today after the heat cut out it was getting up near the redline before going back down to 150.I made sure the coolant was good before coming home but on the way home it was doing the same thing. I changed the thermostat but it's still doing the same thing.When I rev the engine I can see the upper radiator hose collapsing so it seems like there's a clog somewhere but I don't know how to find it. I guess it could be the water pump but then what is causing the suction on the upper radiator hose?Anyone have any ideas?

if the top radiator is collapsing then the radiator is clogged up ! i doubt it,s the water pump ! try this ! once the engine is hot, shut it down and feel the radiator fins next to the fan ! if you feel cold spots then the radiator is clogged in some places ! flush out the whole cooling system ! i had a ford truck that did the same thing until i bought a new radiator !

Q:I have a 99 Olds Intrigue With the 3.8L (Vin K) engine. I have a belt driven water pump, but i was wondering if there is a fuse or relay that is associated with this water pump. I remember knocking a fuse out on accident while changing my radiator and now the water pump appears to not be working

First no fuse for water pump only fuse and relay for rad. fan. First did you install serpentine belt correctly, should have diagram on rad. cover. If on right pump should work. if overheating could have bad thermostat or system needs bleeding, start, turn on heater and see if top hose on rad gets hot if not therm bad, replace, if hot look on top of thermostat housing for small bleeder screw crack open until coolant comes out then tighten,on some if there is a heater line on engine by radiator bleeder is on it. keep rad cap on till done, then remove slowly to release pressure and fill with coolant , GOOD luck.
