Q:what are the disadvantages of using plastic?
Most plastic bags are produced using oil. Oil drilling is harmful to the environment and our addiction to oil is making our nation less secure, while damaging our economy. (Though of course there are other problems with security and economy.) In addition, plastic bags that are not recycled will eventually end up in a landfill or in the ocean. Plastic does not even begin to biodegrade for hundreds of years. This allows it plenty of time to wreak havoc in ecosystems. For instance, sea turtles mistake plastic bags for jellyfish, and eat them. The plastic blocks their digestive tracts, causing painful deaths. Have you ever heard of the Pacific Garbage Patch? It's a plastic continent, at least twice the size of Texas, floating in the Pacific. It's composed of waste, most of which originated on land. Recycling plastic bags is essential, but even this uses considerable energy, which pollutes the air. Banning plastic bags would alleviate these problems. However, plastic must be replaced with reusable bags, not necessarily paper. The problem is, people are accustomed to cheap, convenient lifestyles, and many are unwilling to switch to reusable bags. But I use cloth bags at Target and Winn-Dixie, and I find them to be much more convenient than plastic or paper, because they are sturdier and hold more stuff. So the only real disadvantage that I can think of is that the plastic bag industry would suffer, which is not good is this economic climate. Others might disagree, but IMHO the environment is more important than big business. A final note: As Plastic bags do not account for all of the plastic waste we produce. Most items in stores are over-packaged and use excessive plastic, because the packaging is used for advertisement, not just to protect the product. In order to solve the problems caused by plastic waste, we must recycle, decrease and/or eliminate all plastic, not just bags.
Q:why do cats lick plastic bags?
because plastic bags are primarily made up a polymer called polyethylene. it is something a cat don't really smell often. so they are naturally curious about what that new smelly, stretchy, noisy thing is!
Q:Is it hard to recycle plastic?
Yeah, unfortunately there is some downgrading in the quality of the plastic when it's recycled. That's why most recycled plastic ends up in things like water pipes and park benches where it doesn't matter so much and why recycled plastic isn't in as much demand as say, recycled aluminum. I think it's a big incentive to buy less plastic altogether. I'm surprised the difference was so huge between the bags though.
Q:Is plastic made out of milk biodegradable?
Plastic Made From Milk
Q:How to Plastic Bag Crochet????????
You roll up the plastic like you would roll up string, or yarn. Start by wrapping the plastic around 2 or 3 fingers, pull off your fingers and twist (make a figure 8) fold in half and then just wrap with the remaining plastic. Don't know if it was the hook I was using, but it was a pain to crochet up; the plastic didn't slide over the hook like yarn/thread does.
Q:strong plastic bag smell?
New plastic has got its own characteristic smell which is from the organic compounds that they use in the final process. If one is left in a room with tonnes of new plastics they would experience some lack or air type symptoms. But carryng two or three plastic bags from a grocery store would pose minimal danger, Infact the danger is non existent. By the time you get home the smell of newness in the plastic is gone!I guess its the hypochondria at work.
Q:Would plastic, card or paper make a better sail?
Since a sail acts like a wing at at least some angles to the wind any material ridgid or flexible can act as a sail as long as it can maintain its shape. At other sailing angles it acts as an impeller and this requires a different shape to be efficient. Since the sail serves different functions at different wind angles it is probably best to use a flexible material that can be modified on the fly ie cloth sails. Paper would seem to be the closest to sail cloth with the provission of it not getting wet of course!
Q:chemicals in plastic waste?
chemicals in plastic is a waste because plastic is itself polluting the environment and cannot be renewed so chemicals are also een wasted in making plastic but plastic is of greater use because it is cheap
Q:basic quality controls for plastic products?
ISO 9001:2008 is a certification process that companies can go through to prove that their manufacturing process is set up in such a way as to product a certain {hopefully quality} level of consistent product. The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (and various state level quality awards) look to recognize the companies that have the best of the best quality levels in their fields. Your direct question is on the product quality itself: Thus, some examples would be: - how well does the measurement of the plastic item meet the engineering specifications (i.e. physical dimensions, part weight, color, surface texture, shine or not, or has the part shrunk any {many plastic parts tend to expand or shrink as the temperature changes}). - how well does the part function with its mating parts - how durable is the plastic part (i.e. will it last for a certain time under normal usage) - is there anything that could harm a use (i.e. child projection) - how well does the plastic part work for the customer There are some of the various things that can be measures to ensure that the quality of the plastic part will meet the customer expectations of the intended use. More information can be found at the American Society for Quality
Q:What were uses for plastic?
Plastic is an adjective meaning able to be molded. Clay can be considered to be a plastic material. This means that plastics have been around for many centuries. Check out BASF's website. This will give you some idea as to what is happening today.
