- One way is another crane, although I think you are talking about the ones for really tall buildings. In those cases, they use a crane (self-hoisting tower crane) that is able to raise or hoist itself up as construction continues. - Boot camp is 9 weeks. Then he'll have whats called A school. Im not sure how long that is. He will get paid, but it takes acouple weeks to get into the system, so save up some money before he leaves. Its a great opportonity for your family, the pay is standardized by rand and time in service, googld military pay chart for a better idea what that will be like.

- I can't help you. I read that book a few years ago, and I hated it so hard.

- It might - but the center of gravity and the tripod might not be able to hold the weight of the jib, camera, counter-weights... and personally, I think it would be a pretty expensive mistake to watch my $2,000 camcorder fall and brake because the camera crane collapsed under the weight. A mic tripod is designed to handle about a pound of weight. A consumer camcorder, the jib and counterweights (and maybe a mic or whatever else you throw on there) can be between 5 pounds and 50 pounds. That's why companies like Kessler make what they make. And that's why the companies that makes lesser camera cranes (Cobra, CameraCranes, and others) never use a mic tripod. They use a heavy duty camera tripod or other LARGE, STRONG, item - not a mic stand.

- Not enough information. What is the load weight? What is the size? How do you plan to attach to the machine. What size is the beam cross section? Capacity of the cranes? And so on. It sounds like you might need an engineer to supervise instead of relying on Yahoo Answers for an answer to a potentially deadly if not expensive way to fail.

- Hey Patrick, I was formerly a tower crane erector out of Washington DC. BUt, to yor question, I wold highly recommend you go to your town's Operator engineers Union Hall and inquire as to the qualifications and requirements to enroll in their apprenticeship program. Yes you will have to go thru the apprenticeship program. A tower crane operator is a coveted job among operators... You have to learn to hold your 'P for long periods as well as have great depth perception You coming out of the service, you should be given some preference Good luck
